Launched by Software AG, the work predicts the future of a connected planet

Smart Homes, Feeling Machines, Police Algorithms, and Self-Regulating Transport Networks are just a few of the many concepts explored in the new book released by Software AG, titled Thingalytics. As the number of “things” connected to the Internet exceeds the global population, Thingalytics looks at how the Internet of Things (IoT) can save lives, stop fraud and reduce the world's carbon emissions.

John Bates, chief marketing officer, executive board member of Software AG and expert in intelligent business operations, is the author of the book. The term created by Bates, composed of things and analytics, refers to the real-time use of analytics and algorithms that make sense of the Big Data explosion resulting from the IoT.

In nine chapters, the book talks about the rise of personalization and the context of the environment we live in now, as well as how the Internet of Things is quickly becoming commonplace and transforming the world smarter. Bates also explores the issue of smart homes, machines with feelings and how the IoT is increasingly present in our hospitals, police forces and transportation networks. Thinganalytics uses real-life examples and insights from industry heavyweights, including Coca-Cola, General Electric and Cox Communications, in order to explore the realities associated with this once-futuristic concept.

“Thinganalytics is happening right now. Market leaders and followers of this trend are in the midst of a digital transformation. This brave new world of increasingly intelligent machines and the people who run them will change the entire industry and every market segment. It will also transform the way we live,” says Bates.

In addition to his role at Software AG, Bates serves on the US Technology Advisory Committee, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). A recognized visionary and entrepreneur in the software industry, Bates is one of those responsible for the emergence of Complex Event Processing (CEP) and pioneered the commercial use of event processing as a business solution.
