The book “Digital preservation in information management: a procedural model for higher education institutions”, by José Carlos Abbud Grácio, launched by Cultura Acadêmico, editorial arm of Unesp, proposes a management model for the digital preservation process specifically aimed at higher education institutions.

The work analyzes information management concepts and models, raises issues such as the need for a culture of digital preservation, the implementation of an appropriate management model and the costs of the entire process, and addresses the aspects that guide digital preservation and the way in which institutions have been dealing with the problems arising from its implementation.

The topic is important for universities, as they generate large volumes of scientific, technological, cultural and artistic content and need to share this knowledge with society, in addition to preserving their history and administrative documents.

The author's objective is to highlight that the biggest challenge is dealing with technology, which offers a growing range of alternatives and whose components are subject to constant change. Programs, the machines that support them, and even files change significantly over time. At the same time, it is necessary to define how to choose what should be preserved and how to develop and manage this process, which is complex and full of details.

José Carlos Abbud Grácio has a degree in Computer Science and a Masters and Doctorate in Information Science from Unesp. Former IT director at Unesp, he is a member of the institution's Information Technology Committee.
