Visiting public managers to the space is free and can be scheduled directly at ABDI

What makes a city a smart city? Adopting 4.0 technologies, such as artificial intelligence, electromobility, Internet of Things, independently, does not impact the lives of municipalities. “There is an important difference between innovating and using technologies. The tools must be integrated, work for the community and bring improvements to people's lives so that, in fact, innovation happens, ”explains Tiago Faierstein, Leader of the Smart Cities Project at the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI).

The Living Lab project, developed by ABDI in partnership with the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI), was installed in Foz do Iguaçu and occupies the space that used to be housing, built in the 1970s and 1980s, to house the workers who built the Itaipu power plant. "It is a controlled environment, located within the area of the Itaipu Plant, a place that has a movement of 7 thousand people a day and receives about 1,100 visitors per month", explains Faierstein.

Miguel Matrakas, Manager of the Latin American Center for Open Technologies (Celtab) at PTI, reports that the idea is to demonstrate how technologies can be used, in practice, to public managers. “Living Lab integrates all existing technologies in the park, such as electric vehicles, shared bicycles, smart meters, with others implemented, such as intelligent public lighting, with WiFi, cameras and shooting sensors and monitoring using drones. Everything is monitored by the Command and Operational Control Center (CCO) ”, he says. A fleet of vehicles powered by biomethane (obtained from garbage) and electric vehicles is also in circulation at the Living Lab, with charging stations and monitored by a digital platform (software) for urban mobility.

“In addition to a showcase for mayors across the country to see how technologies work in a real environment, with great circulation of people and vehicles, Living Lab is a great testing environment, with a focus on usability, interoperability and cybersecurity”, complements Tiago. The intention of the project, at this stage, is to implement the technologies in a real municipality. Visiting public managers to the space is free and can be scheduled directly at ABDI.
