Semiannual Innovation Survey was presented on Wednesday (03/20) by IBGE and ABDI, in partnership with UFRJ

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI) presented on Wednesday (20/03), the results of the Semiannual Innovation Survey 2022: Basic Indicators (Pintec Semiannual), carried out in partnership with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Among the main data is the investment of R$ 36.9 billion in internal Research and Development (R&D) activities by innovative industrial companies with 100 or more employed people.

For the president of ABDI, Ricardo Cappelli, these investments must generate a concrete result for society. “When we cross-reference investment data in R&D with economic activity and the result in practice, we are able to have a more concrete debate with society about what this investment represents, what it generates for the Brazilian people”, he points out, highlighting that, in the 2.9% growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year, the industry still maintained a large concentration in traditional sectors, not transformation.

“I think this is a debate about how we can better combine investment in innovation and R&D with universities and investment in companies and how we are going to achieve the dream of Brazilian industrial development,” said Cappelli.

According to the president of IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, dialogue with ABDI and universities is essential for the institute to advance in experimental research and help managers to have a thermometer of how public policy actually reaches reality and the different actors.

“IBGE is characterized by being a kind of postcard for the country, portraying a reality, but it can also be a compass so that the government, the private sector and society can monitor the extent to which what is done is changing or consolidating reality”, he stated.

Pintec Semestral 2022 was presented by the coordinator of Structural and Thematic Statistics in Companies at IBGE, Alessandro Pinheiro. During the event, ABDI and IBGE signed a Protocol of Intent to bring the entities together in joint actions aimed at strengthening the Brazilian industrial sector and the country's sustainable development.

“We want to dive deeper into the numbers, needs and bottlenecks that companies are facing so that we can help Brazilian companies to be more competitive”, commented the director of Sustainable Economy and Industrialization at ABDI, Perpétua Almeida.

Highlights

Considering the topics covered, Pintec takes a transversal position to the various missions defined in the New Industry Brazil (NIB), which provides for the impetus for scientific and technological development and the induction of innovation through the collection and dissemination of information. It supports, more directly, mission 4, called “Digital transformation of the industry to increase productivity”.

According to the research, a total of 86.3% of expenditure on internal R&D activities is concentrated in companies with 500 or more employed people. In 2022, 39.8% of innovative companies intended to increase expenditure on internal R&D activities in 2023. For 2024, 50.8% expect to increase this expenditure compared to last year.

The innovation rate of companies was 68.1% in 2022, with 33% of this total implementing new products and business processes simultaneously. The innovation rate is higher in large companies, reaching 77% in those with more than 500 employed people.

The machinery and equipment manufacturing sector leads, with an innovation rate of 89.3%, followed by computer, electronic and optical equipment (87.5%) and chemical products (84.7%), which in 2021 occupied the first position .

Another fact concerns sustainability. In 2022, 15.8% of companies published a sustainability report, an index that reaches 36.5% among companies with more than 500 employed people. Of the companies that published the reports, 86.5% were innovative in 2022.

Technological Orders

According to Cappelli, the Agency wants to expand its technical support work for technological orders so that public purchases can encourage innovation. “ABDI has an extremely qualified technical team providing support to companies so that they can invest in innovation. We already do this with Petrobras, we will soon have a new contract with Correios and we are talking to other companies in the public sector”, he said.

“ABDI can be essential at this time of taking research data and showing public managers that they can, indeed, carry out innovation. We also made an agreement with the TCU and we are working together to make the manager feel safe”, commented the director of Productive and Technological Development, Carlos Geraldo.

Also present at the event were the director of the UFRJ Institute of Economics, Carlos Frederico Leão Rocha, the executive secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Luis Fernandes, the secretary of Industrial Development, Innovation, Commerce and Services of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Uallace Moreira Lima, the president of the Regional Economic Council (Corecon) of the DF, Luciana Acioly, representatives of the National Council for Industrial Development (CNDI) and members of the ABDI Deliberative Council.
