Intel has launched the “Intel Maker Marathon 2016”, a competition that will encourage young students, from Elementary School and High School, to create projects focused on the Internet of Things, using Intel architecture.

Interested parties should meet in groups of three to five people to develop projects focused on technological innovation, integrating and using IoT, with the objective of solving social or urban problems, whether in communities or even in the world.

Teams must submit their ideas on the competition website www.intel.com.br/maratonamaker until the day September 30, 2016. Fifty projects will be selected for the next leg of the marathon and will receive a Genuino 101 development kit – a circuit board for learning and rapid prototyping based on the low-power Intel Curie module.

“We want to promote the maker culture among young people and foster the idea that technology can be applied to solve community problems. The Internet of Things and the development of new, easy-to-use technologies, such as the development kits that will be distributed in this initiative, open up a huge range of possibilities for students who want to encourage their innovative side”, explains David González, director general of the Intel in Brazil”.

Selection and criteria

Until October 7th, a commission formed by Technology and Innovation professionals will select the 50 best ideas, chosen based on the following criteria: originality, creativity and adequacy to the theme; real possibility of developing a prototype coherent with the proposed innovation; and implementation and market feasibility.

The chosen teams will receive a “Makerkit”, containing a Genuine 101 board, ideal for developing projects in learning environments, and peripheral items, which will be used to turn the initiatives into reality. Participants will receive support from mentors, who will help teams throughout the period.

Three projects that stand out the most will be elected as winners, one from Elementary School II and two from High School. Innovation trip winning students will visit Intel facilities, interact with company experts and other activities.

Intel will announce the three winning teams by November 25, 2016.
