Global prize for startups will allocate €50,000

Startups with creative ideas for the electricity sector have until August 31 to apply for the EDP Open Innovation award, a partnership between EDP Brasil, a company that operates in the areas of generation, distribution, commercialization and energy solutions with the Portuguese newspaper Expresso and the accelerator Fábrica de Startups.

“The objective is to stimulate the emergence of innovative and disruptive businesses, to anticipate the transformation of the electricity sector and contribute to its development, making it increasingly efficient and sustainable”, says João Brito Martins, Director of Strategy, Organization and Innovation from EDP Brazil.

The world's largest competition for innovation in the energy sector was born from the merger of the EDP Inovação and Energia de Portugal awards, which encouraged entrepreneurship in the energy sector. Interested parties, from any part of the world, must submit their projects with the potential to reach markets on a global scale.

For the first edition of the contest, the topics covered are related to clean energy and recent trends in the sector. The competition covers the following topics: energy efficiency; electric mobility; internet of things; M2M (Machine to Machine); machine learning; information Technology; wind, solar, offshore electrical production, or other forms of energy; energy storage and distribution; and natural gas.

Teams must be formed by 2 to 4 members and can now register through the website http://edpopeninnovation.edp.pt.

Contest stages and awards

Up to 30 groups will be selected for interviews conducted by an international jury. In this phase, the competitors will have the opportunity to detail the business model and persuade the judges to bet on their projects. From these conversations, 15 teams will be chosen that will benefit from the startup acceleration program in Lisbon, throughout the month of October. Travel and accommodation costs in Portugal will be the responsibility of the EDP organization, limited to two members per group.

The teams will work at Fábrica de Startups to accelerate their projects and will have contact with the FabStart method, which allows simulating the product in the real world. This is a unique opportunity to share experiences and improve work, while teams will have the help of periodic mentoring sessions with renowned professionals in their areas of interest.
The three groups with the best performance throughout the competition, according to criteria established by the organizing committee of the EDP Open Innovation, will exhibit at the EDP stand at the Web Summit, the largest and most important event for technology startups in Europe. The winning team will be awarded €50,000, an amount to be used exclusively for the development of the idea.

The winners will be announced in November, after all the members of the acceleration program will present the pitch to an audience made up of EDP employees, investors and guests in Lisbon.

Participants with high potential projects will also be invited to join the EDP Starter program in Portugal, Spain or Brazil. The regulation and more information about the award are available on the website: http://edpopeninnovation.edp.pt/.
