Supporter of the 8th edition of ABES SOFTWARE CONFERENCE 2018, the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI), a federal agency linked to the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, has been working to reduce bureaucracy and speed up the registration of computer programs in Brazil. And, in addition, it is committed to making companies and developers have a new image of the body.

Part of this initiative is the INPI's new digital phase in software registration, which will complete one year on September 12, 2017, when the new online system for computer program registration was launched.

According to Helmar Alvares, head of the INPI's Computer Program and Integrated Circuit Topography Division, “users currently have a more agile, secure and fully computerized service, which has led to a significant reduction in the average time for granting the certificate. registration”, he points out.

According to data from the autarchy, the period went from about 1,300 days to up to 7 working days, a service provided at an affordable rate. To provide greater legal certainty for the user throughout the process, they adopted the digital signature when sending documents, using e-CPF or e-CNPJ digital certificates.

This new system is called e-RPC, and is part of the measures to reduce bureaucracy in public services promoted by the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (MDIC). In Brazil, computer program registration is granted by the INPI and automatically protects user rights in 176 countries that are part of the Berne Convention, which is valid for 50 years, remembering that a new registration must be requested after the development of new versions. of the original software.

“This is a constantly evolving market and we see a growing demand for software protection in the face of unfair competition and unauthorized copying of this intangible asset. INPI is also attuned to digital transformation. We need to communicate to the IT sector that we have evolved, we are more agile”, concludes Alvares.
