Coursera has just launched 19 IBM professional certificates in Portuguese to help more students develop the skills they need to advance their careers. This effort is part of Coursera's expansion of AI-powered translation to help make education more equitable and inclusive by bridging the language gap.

IBM's basic and advanced professional certificates on Coursera prepare students for roles in in-demand fields such as AI EngineeringCybersecurityData Science, among others Entry-level professional certificates are specifically designed to help students from all backgrounds – no college degree or industry experience required – land an entry-level role in these fields.

According to Coursera Student Results Report 2023, one in four students who completed an entry-level professional certificate on Coursera reports landing a new job. IBM provides certified earners with access to resources to help them in their job search, including interview preparation.

“More than 1.3 million students have already enrolled in our Coursera Professional Certificates. The availability of these transformational programs in Portuguese is a significant milestone that will help us reach even more students,” says Nicole Borowski, communications lead at IBM Learning. “We are excited to help Portuguese speakers, in Brazil and around the world, enter or advance in digital careers.” More than 5 million students registered on Coursera are in Brazil, where Portuguese is the official language. With AI-powered translations, students can access the full course experience: lecture video subtitles, course readings, quizzes, assessments, assignments, instructions, discussion suggestions, course descriptions, and syllabi. Students can also switch between their local language or use subtitles in English courses to improve their proficiency.

“In a world that is rapidly globalizing, language barriers can prevent students from accessing the high-quality education they deserve,” says Marni Baker-Stein, chief content officer at Coursera. “We are rapidly expanding our AI-powered translation efforts to help more students everywhere access education in the languages they are most comfortable with – empowering them to transform their lives, careers and communities.”
