Companies integrate technologies and services against threats

Cisco and IBM announced that they are working together to combat growing global cybercrime threats. In this new agreement, the companies will be closer sharing services, products and knowledge about the threats.

Cisco's security solutions will be integrated with QRadar, IBM's security platform that protects organizations across the network, endpoint, and cloud. IT users will also benefit from extending IBM's global services support to Cisco's MSSP (Managed Security Services) offerings. The agreement also establishes a new relationship between the research teams of both companies, IBM X-Force and Cisco TALOS, who will share data from threat studies and jointly coordinate monitoring of cybersecurity incidents.

Today, one of the biggest challenges for security professionals is the use of tools that do not interact or communicate. A recent Cisco survey of 3000 Chief Security Officers (CSO) shows that 65% organizations use between 6 to 50 different products that are not integrated, causing a major challenge to security teams. The focus of this partnership is to help organizations reduce the time to diagnose and combat threats through integrated tools that automate this process, with more precision and agility.
Integrating threat defense methods across networks and clouds

The damage that cybercrimes bring to companies continues to increase. In 2016, the Ponemon Institute revealed that this figure was the highest ever recorded, at U$ 4 million – an increase of 29% over the last three years. One factor that affects the value of the loss is response time, as incidents contained in less than 30 days cost companies approximately US$1 million less than those that took more than 30 days to resolve. The growing losses have given cybercrime more visibility and, in order to fight them faster, it is necessary to use integrated approaches.

The idea of the partnership is that the Cisco Threat Grid application, which isolates and analyzes possible threats, will be available on the IBM Security App Exchange, increasing the chances of the user identifying and remediating a threat. In addition, the IBM Resilient Incident Response Platform (IRP), which bridges the gap between security operations and incident response, will work with these two applications, suggesting solutions to respond to incidents quickly. With this, the solutions proposed by the IRP can take into account the Threat Grid analysis, and vice versa, improving information security.

“Cisco's architectural approach, when combined with IBM's operating and remediation platforms, will bring the most capable security products and services to market,” said David Ulevitch, General Manager of Security, Cisco.

“IBM has long been willing to collaborate with different organizations on cybersecurity. With Cisco joining our immune defense system, our consumers will greatly expand their use of cognitive technologies such as Watson. In addition, having IBM X-Force working alongside Cisco TALOS will be a huge plus for security professionals fighting cybercrime,” explains Marc van Zadelhoff, General Manager of Security at IBM.

Threat intelligence and service management

The IBM X-Force and Cisco TALOS teams will also collaborate on research, initially focused on reporting the most challenging security issues for both companies' customers, connecting their top experts. For consumers already associated with Cisco Threat Intel, IBM will deliver an integration platform to its products. This partnership will bring expansion in security analysis and solutions.
