For the first time in Brazil, a hospital will use the fee for performance format, which links the service provider's gain to the quality of care

Medical technology makes continuous progress in patient care and treatment. Now, technology is opening up opportunities to implement new business models in private healthcare.

Currently, the form of collection is the fee for service and it has been in operation since the 1930s. In it, the amount sent to health operators is based on production, that is, all materials used in the treatment of the patient are listed on a detailed invoice. and the total to be charged is based on a pre-defined table of values.

Industry experts believe that this format ends up stimulating the volume of services, without taking into account the quality of service. Thinking about it, a new model begins to emerge, focused on the result for the patient. The fee for service or fee for performance assesses the relationship between the actions taken by physicians and the cost of reaching them, prioritizing the qualification of procedures.

Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, in São Paulo, was the first to bring this new model to Brazil. And, in order to obtain a satisfactory result in the change, technology was needed to develop a network to exchange health data between different providers of the Institution, in order to guarantee a fast, smooth and error-free flow of information. Reducing costs and errors is critical to the success of the new performance model rate.

Infor, the global leader in healthcare software and business cloud, with the Infor Cloverleaf solution, was selected to drive this transformative data exchange into the new model. Infor Cloverleaf integrates clinical data from more than 10,000 hospitals worldwide. In the US, 42% of hospitals, more than 900 institutions in Europe and many more around the world rely on the platform every minute to move critical patient data across their care networks. According to the company, Cloverleaf enables the fastest and most straightforward clinical data integration model for modern and legacy systems across care networks. This promotes a radical improvement in the clinical and administrative processes of healthcare organizations around the world.

Joel Rydbeck, director of Infor Health Latin America, explains that Infor Cloverleaf is able to connect all clinical systems, immediately reducing costs, errors, gaps and information delays, significantly improving patient satisfaction and outcomes. “Enabling clinicians to assess and treat patients with all their current data is critical for healthcare systems to deliver optimal care. Undoubtedly, correct clinical information improves care for patients and their loved ones,” he adds.

Infor Cloverleaf is being implemented now and will be operational before the end of 2019. Once implemented, the Hospital plans to immediately reduce integration costs at 40% while also reducing the time to integrate new systems at more than 50%. Combined with improved patient care data, this will help the hospital transition to a fee for performance model as they exchange accurate patient data in real time with third-party labs, health plans and other providers.

Atualpa Carvalho de Aguiar, technology manager at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, says that “the choice for Infor was due to its unique ability to connect disparate partners in our healthcare system, combined with its solidity in the North American market and the cost-effectiveness of the project. Experience with using Cloverleaf in the integration layer has been satisfactory. We see Infor as a partner that will be able to take the Hospital to other levels in terms of innovation in healthcare and new business propositions”.
