Agreement will enable the installation of a new engineering center for the technology giant at the headquarters of the Technological Research Institute (IPT), in the capital

The Government of São Paulo and Google signed a partnership to install a new engineering center for the company in the capital. Consolidating São Paulo's position as a global hub for innovation and technology, the unit will be installed in one of the buildings on the campus of the Institute for Technological Research (IPT), linked to the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation. The announcement was made this Wednesday (21) by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, in a ceremony at Palácio dos Bandeirantes.

“We are going to have Google in São Paulo with one of the largest engineering centers in the world. Congratulations to IPT for celebrating an increasingly stronger alliance between academia, the State and the private sector. We gain from opening up opportunities, training, training, creating jobs and prospects. I really believe in innovation, science, technology and the state of São Paulo. Here, we will begin to point the way for Brazil to, in fact, be the country of the future”, stated Tarcísio.

Also participating in the announcement were the state secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Vahan Agopyan, the CEO of IPT, Liedi Bernucci, and directors of Google in Brazil. The initiative is part of IPT Open, which aims to promote and strengthen the innovation ecosystem with joint and strategic action between the public sector, the private sector, academic researchers and startup leaders.

“Google has a long-term commitment to Brazil, a country that is among the largest markets for our nine platforms with more than 1 billion users worldwide, including Search,” said Fábio Coelho, president of Google Brazil. “We will have a positive impact on the Brazilian economy of more than R$ 150 billion in 2022 and we will continue to invest and contribute to the country’s development in the coming decades.”

With construction expected to begin in the second half of 2024, the expectation is that the new engineering center will be ready to receive project professionals from 2026. The partnership between the Government of São Paulo and Google will be fundamental to promoting collaboration in research, development and innovation projects for the benefit of the population.

“In line with the guidelines of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, we seek to reinforce the importance of strategic partnerships for the growth of Science, Technology and Innovation in the State of São Paulo. This way, we can guarantee that several actions are being carried out for the benefit of the population”, declared Secretary Vahan Agopyan.

Artificial intelligence and online security

One of the work fronts of the new project will be the development of solutions based on artificial intelligence and related to security and privacy in the online environment. The space at IPT will be multidisciplinary and will work in close collaboration with the Belo Horizonte engineering center, Google's first office in Latin America.

“Brazil is a powerhouse for engineering talent and a key part of Google’s global innovation ecosystem,” says Alexandre Freire, director of engineering at Google in São Paulo. “Our goal is for the new office in São Paulo to become a reference around the world in several areas, including the development of Artificial Intelligence for online security solutions.”

How is it going to be

The project will be based in building 1, one of the main buildings in the IPT complex, respecting the original 1940 architecture and creating spaces integrated with the community. The 7,000 m² space will be revitalized while preserving external features, such as the facade, and also the name of the Adriano Marchini Building itself. In addition to renovating the existing internal structures, designed based on an accessible universal design, the center will have spaces for events, training and an auditorium.

“For almost 125 years, IPT has sought, based on its mission, to create and apply technological solutions to increase the competitiveness of companies and promote the quality of life of society. Throughout this history, the creation of the IPT Open program translates into an initiative that opens the IPT campus for institutions to install their innovation centers involving startups, public and private companies, universities, researchers and government bodies in the same environment”, says Liedi Bernucci , CEO of IPT. “It is within this ecosystem that Google arrives to install its Center, bringing the vision of creating a smarter future, in which technology improves people's lives. Google’s presence in the program offers a series of benefits, contributing to the development of skills, knowledge and future opportunities in our society.”

Among the architectural sustainability measures, the new center will use sensors and automated windows, enabling natural ventilation of the environments, and the use of photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, in addition to drainage systems.

The partnership will also promote the use of technologies, share knowledge and good accessibility practices, in addition to creating an event space to connect the community of developers and startups and also offering Google Cloud training to students from across the IPT academic community.
