- The program seeks to increase the representation of black people in the company, and does not require fluency in English
- In the second edition, Next Step was expanded and now includes opportunities in the Software Engineering area, in addition to the Business area
Google announces the opening of registration for the 2nd edition of the Next Step, an internship program that seeks to increase the representation of black people among the company's talents. Launched in 2019, the program was expanded: now, in addition to seeking talent in Greater São Paulo, it will also select interns to work at the Google Engineering Center in Belo Horizonte.
This year, vacancies will be divided into the areas of Business and Software Engineering. The Business area will select interns to work at the company's office in São Paulo and will include several teams, including sales, marketing, support and customer solutions, finance, legal, among others. The intern will be allocated to a team, but may participate in projects involving other areas throughout the program. Undergraduate students from any area may enroll, as long as they have training scheduled between March 2024 and June 2024. As in the first edition of the program, knowledge of English will not be required and, as part of the program, interns will receive classes from the language costed by the company.
The openings in the Software Engineering program will be offered at Google's office in Belo Horizonte. In this case, students enrolled in undergraduate courses related to the areas of technology, such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, among others, will be considered, with completion forecast for the period between March 2024 and June 2024. To participate, you must have basic notions of some programming language, such as: C, C ++, Java, JavaScript or Python, as well as basic English for programming.
Students must be available to reside in the cities where Google's offices are located: São Paulo, for Business, and Belo Horizonte, for Software Engineering.
Increased representativeness
Next Step, with other internship programs on Google, seeks to support students in their professional development, with the possibility of being hired after the internship ends. To this end, Google Brasil took an important initiative to encourage the increase in the representation of these talents in the company: the program does not require fluent English as a prerequisite.
“Investing in racial equity in the labor market is urgent and must be the responsibility of all organizations. The Next Step is one of the initiatives that are part of Google's global commitment to increase the representation of historically under-represented groups in our workforce and create a sense of belonging for all”, highlights Flávia Garcia, Head of Diversity, Equity and Google Equality for Latin America and Canada.
The manager of the Internship Program, Lia Romano, says that the successful experience of the first group shows that the program has been able to achieve its objective. “The Next Step emerged as a pilot project by Google Brazil, created with the objective of better reflecting the country's rich diversity in the company's workforce. Two years later, we are happy to announce the continuity of the program with the launch of the second group in São Paulo and the new vacancies in Belo Horizonte”, says Lia.
The project also has the unrestricted support of Fabio Coelho, president of Google Brazil. “We want Google to be a place where people with different views, backgrounds and experiences can thrive. We have heard encouraging reports from interns in the first class of the program. Most of them were hired after the end of the internship, a sign that shows us that we are moving in the right direction”, says Coelho.
Berthier Ribeiro-Neto, director of the Google Engineering Center in Latin America, considers the inclusion of Software Engineering vacancies in the program as an important step towards breaking down barriers to access the technology market. “We know that there is a historical underrepresentation of black people in the field of Software Engineering and we want this reality to change. Therefore, we are also going to have a structure in our Engineering Center in Belo Horizonte that offers the necessary tools for interns to develop and be able to build and manage their careers in the technology market”, says the executive. “We believe that promoting racial representation is also the path that will lead us to create better and more diverse products”, he adds.
See how the Next Step 2021 selection process will work
In the first step, a profile selection will be made based on the program's prerequisites. Candidates will then be invited to informational and development-focused events, which, in this edition, will take place virtually due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic. In this stage, the students will be introduced to Google Culture, will get to know the company's day-to-day activities and will have more details about the attributes evaluated during the interviews. Candidates selected after reviewing the form and résumé will also be able to undergo a mock interview with Google contributors in order to prepare them for the final stage of interviews with the teams.
For Business vacancies, at the headquarters in São Paulo, registration is already open through the external consultancy Empodera and must be made by August 30th ( inscriptions on this link). In Belo Horizonte, for Software Engineering vacancies, the opening of the process is scheduled for the beginning of September, through the platform Hello
