Artificial intelligence and the circular economy

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Google, with support from McKinsey, produced a paper to explain how artificial intelligence can accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

The study is based on more than 40 interviews with experts and presents the first insights into how artificial intelligence can be applied to generate a circular economy at scale. The study assesses two value chains, food and agriculture, in addition to electronics. For the first chain, the estimate is that AI may generate US$ 127 billion per year in 2030; for the second, the opportunity is around US$ 90 billion per year.

What is circular economy?
The circular economy is a type of economy in which growth is gradually separated from the consumption of finite resources. Its principles include designing solutions for waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use and regenerating natural systems.

What is artificial intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) deals with models and systems that perform functions generally associated with human intelligence, such as reasoning and learning. As one of the main trends, AI is expected to add US$ 13 trillion in economic activity worldwide by 2030.
