In the next one to three years, multimodal Generative Artificial Intelligence models will increasingly enrich applications
Eighty percent of enterprise applications and software will be multimodal by 2030, compared to less than 10% in 2024, according to the Gartner, Inc..
“The shift to multimodal enterprise software is a fundamental transformation in business operations and innovation,” he says. Roberta Cozza, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner. “The Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Multimodal will revolutionize enterprise applications by adding previously unattainable features and functionality, impacting industries such as healthcare, finance, and manufacturing. By enhancing domain-specific language models, it will improve accuracy, automate operations, and boost contextual decision intelligence, enabling AI to take proactive action across all tasks.
High-impact technologies like multimodal GenAI models are at the center of Gartner's Emerging Technology Impact Radar for Generative Artificial Intelligence. Product leaders will need to make critical decisions about investing in these emerging GenAI technologies to enable customers to achieve new levels of value in their businesses.

Multimodal GenAI provides the ability to use multiple data types in inputs (inputs) and outputs (outputs), such as images, videos, audio (speech), text, and numeric data, into a single generative model. Multimodality expands GenAI's usability by allowing models to interact and create outputs from data across multiple modalities.
Currently, many multimodal models offer processing in two or three modalities (e.g., text-to-video or speech-to-image). This will expand in the coming years to include new and more diverse modalities.
"Companies should focus on integrating multimodal capabilities into software to improve user experience and operational efficiency. By leveraging the diverse data inputs and outputs that multimodal GenAI offers, companies can unlock new levels of productivity and innovation," says Cozza.
