Connected vehicles will be important elements of the Internet of Things

According to Gartner, a technology research and advice company, there will be 250 million vehicles connected on the roads by 2020. These cars will be responsible for the development of new on-board services and will have the ability to drive autonomously, that is, without a driver. Over the next five years, the proportion of new vehicles equipped with this ability will increase significantly, making connected cars important elements of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Gartner also predicts that 4.9 billion things connected to the web will be in use in 2015, an increase of 30% over 2014, and that number will reach 25 billion by 2020.

“Connected cars are already a reality and wireless connectivity is growing rapidly from luxury models and premium brands. The increase in consumption and the creation of digital content in vehicles will lead to the need for more sophisticated information and entertainment systems, creating opportunities for application processors, graphics accelerators, displays and human-machine interface technologies. At the same time, new concepts of mobility and the use of connected cars will lead to new business models and expansion of alternatives for the acquisition of automobiles, especially in urban environments ”, says James F. Hines, research director at Gartner.
