Having an experimental mindset, being a data keeper and betting on artificial intelligence

O Gartner Inc., A world reference in research and advice for companies, warns that the success of digital businesses is being increasingly driven by Data & Analytics strategies capable of increasing corporate ambitions. As a result, data and analytics leaders and their teams now have a great opportunity to deliver transformational value to businesses.

The trends were presented in Gartner Data & Analytics 2019 Conference, in São Paulo, on May 29th and 30th, and of which ABES was one of the institutional supporters. A group of company executives met with journalists to talk about the main trends for the segment.

Peter Krensky, Senior Principal Analyst at Gartner, said that while virtually all organizations are putting data at the center of their digital strategy, having a clear purpose is key to delivering value to the organization. "If you're the director or data manager for your organization, you need to be clear about your objective," says Krensky. "There will always be ambiguity in data and analysis, but that's why it's so important for leaders to make their principles and goals clearer in order to foster collaboration and creativity."

To achieve this scenario, Gartner identified three leadership principles that managers of Data & Analytics initiatives must master to stand out their projects in this increasingly complex and competitive world.

Adopt an experimental mindset

“Too often, organizations just measure what's easy, rather than collecting new data to create more meaningful metrics. Discovering new metrics using alternative data can boost performance. However, valid data and metrics require experimentation,” he says. Donald Feinberg, Distinguished Vice President Analyst at Gartner. However, the executive recognizes that this process represents a slow transition and bets on the “people and technologies” double for the success of organizations.

By adopting an experimental mindset, data and analytics leaders can:

– Constantly challenge the decisions made by the organization based on data;

– Anticipate unintended consequences of metrics;

– Trying out new data, new measures and new analytical models.

"Adopting an experimental mindset won't be easy, but it's the best way to provide a data-driven organization and avoid creating a metrics tyranny," says Feinberg.

Be the guide and keeper of your customers' data

Gartner believes that privacy as we knew it before is something that no longer exists. With Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and the huge change brought about by the digitization of business, it is virtually impossible to guarantee privacy, despite this being a challenge to be faced. The role of Data & Analytics leaders is to act as information stewards, ensuring its relevance and security as the guide and guardian of the data.

"As guides and guardians of our customers' data, we can ensure that our users have all the information they need, but only about what they need. Privacy needs to be protected, going beyond what is legally required, to respect customer expectations of who can have access to their data and of the different possible purposes for the use of this information", he says Rita Sallam, Distinguished Vice President Analyst at Gartner.

“By balancing transparency with integrity, organizations can use data to drive the creation of insights that guide decisions and that will make customers and citizens happy to offer the data that will be used to their advantage. In organizations, the importance of data governance as a competitive differential grows”.

Automate the manual and promote the creative

No company or government will prosper or survive without strong investments in Artificial Intelligence, Gartner points out. However, Data & Analytics leaders must adopt a principle to focus Artificial Intelligence technologies to automate manual tasks and thereby allow large amounts of resources to focus on more creative work.

“New Artificial Intelligence projects must not foster contradictory relationships between man and machine. They must be designed to integrate people and machines and create a dynamic that amplifies their strengths and compensates for their weaknesses," he says João Tapadinhas, Vice President Analyst at Gartner. "This is the principle for designing, implementing and expanding AI projects that Data & Analytics leaders must follow."

For the executive, artificial intelligence is complementing people's work and not taking jobs, helping to compile information, streamline analysis and decisions. The results will be better and we believe in creating jobs, promoting a new revolution based on artificial intelligence in the 21st century”, he concludes.
