By 2025, 60% of Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) leaders will drive business innovation using disruptive technologies, compared to fewer than 5% doing so today. The forecast is Gartner, Inc., a world leader in enterprise research and advice, noting that this trend of infrastructure-driven disruption will support the growth of I&O within enterprises.

"As companies face increasing pressure to reduce operating costs, most I&O leaders have taken on a tactical rather than a strategic role – essentially, becoming custodians of legacy infrastructure," says Katherine Lord, Vice President of Research at Gartner. “The result of this has been a delay in I&O maturity over the last decade. Infrastructure and operations leaders should be harnessing the power of disruptive technologies such as A cloud and Artificial intelligence (AI), as well as discovering new opportunities to act as business entrepreneurs”.

Infrastructure-driven disruption is the use of I&O technologies, processes, people, skills and resources to promote disruption and embrace risk. “I&O leaders advocating infrastructure-driven disruption are constantly looking for new ways to use technology to add value to the business, rather than just remaining reactive to stakeholder needs,” says Lord.

According to her, digital disruption is transforming more than just companies. The adoption of technologies such as Cloud, Edge Computing, IoT, DevOps and AIOps is rendering traditional infrastructure and operations models obsolete, challenging infrastructure and operations leaders to rethink traditional processes, partnerships and technologies. Executives and IT professionals will come together to discuss infrastructure, application modernization and service management, in addition to receiving important insights from Gartner analysts.

Gartner analysts will discuss infrastructure-driven disruption and other technology trends during the Conference Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Cloud Strategies, which takes place on the 14th and 15th of April, in São Paulo. At the event, Brazilian and international experts will present vital connections between technologies, management and culture with a special focus on the leadership of each Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) function. Participants will be able to interact with more than 1,000 IT professionals, visionaries and leaders.

New technologies pave the way for infrastructure and operations maturity

The IT infrastructure remains in a period of prolonged change, spurred on by new technologies that only add to the complexity of modern, distributed infrastructures. Recognizing the need for growth to stay relevant in the digital age, 45% of respondents to the 2019 Gartner Survey of Executive I&O Leaders indicated that improving maturity was among the top three goals of their I&O teams. Adopt technologies such as automation, edge computing and quantum computing can help I&O leaders mature their infrastructure for the next digital wave.

"Infrastructure-driven disruption is about more than preventing obsolescence," says the Gartner analyst. “It represents an opportunity for I&O to purposefully adopt an entrepreneurial approach to extend its role beyond existing organizational charts and even reinvent its own role. keep track of emerging technologies will help centralize I&O as part of the business innovation and market disruption they support.”

Evolve talent, culture and practices for the future

By 2022, traditional I&O skills will be insufficient for more than half of the operational tasks that I&O leaders will be responsible for. Furthermore, while 66% of I&O leaders believe that culture-related behaviors undermine their agility, 47% have not adapted such behaviors to better align with cultural and organizational transformation.

“I&O leaders are at a critical decision point where they can choose to embrace disruption or just watch and wait,” says Lord. "For those who choose to take a proactive approach, new skills, talent and culture will be essential to drive change in the early stages."

Strategic alignment and intentional alliances with the C-suite will also be crucial for the future of I&O. As businesses become increasingly digital, I&O leaders have the chance to use their technology expertise to collaborate with other leaders on innovative opportunities.

“Digital transformation presents a real opportunity for infrastructure and operations to align more closely with the CEO and other key business stakeholders, elevating the function to a more strategic role within the organization and helping the company stay ahead of the curve. curve when it comes to adopting disruptive technologies,” says the analyst.
