Fernando Francischini promises intense legislative agenda

On March 8, federal deputy Fernando Francischini (SD-PR) assumed the presidency of the Parliamentary Front for the Defense of Intellectual Property and Combating Piracy. He replaced Nelson Marchezan Júnior (PSDB-RS), the new mayor of Porto Alegre.

The front aims to promote actions to strengthen innovation, competitiveness and productivity in the country and intends to adopt an intense legislative agenda. ABES has supported the initiative since its creation in 2015, together with 36 other sector entities.

“Brazil loses R$ 120 billion annually due to piracy. It's money that doesn't go into the company's billing and is no longer collected in taxes. The country needs to start treating piracy as a matter of State and the parliamentary front intends to be an inducer of this process”, says deputy Francischini, citing figures from the Brazilian Association to Combat Counterfeiting and the FNCP – National Fund to Combat Piracy.

ABES against piracy

The defense of intellectual property and copyright has been one of ABES' main commitments since its foundation, an activity that has intensified over the years. This effort has been recognized with the National Prize for Combating Piracy, won in several editions, which aims to identify projects by public and private entities that have excelled in fighting piracy and other crimes against intellectual property.

The awards reinforce the importance of initiatives such as Empreendedor Legal, a campaign created by ABES in 2013, with the objective of encouraging fair competition between companies, alerting Brazilian entrepreneurs about the competitive advantages of having the correct licensing of their technological environments and for the legal risks in case of non-compliance, as well as providing information on how to implement a more effective management of software assets and improve business management. The entity also operates a portal for anonymous complaints against software piracy, which can be made by anyone through the website: http://www.denunciepirataria.org.br
