ABES supports event that takes place on 10/31

On October 31, Florianópolis will host the first Smart City Forum Floripa at the Softplan Auditorium at Sapiens Parque, a version in the format of the Forum of the World Congress that takes place annually in Barcelona. In Curitiba, the version includes congress and exhibition. Four main themes linked to the development of cities and the quality of life of citizens will be debated: governance, urban mobility, renewable energies and planned neighborhoods.

The event will bring together more than two dozen experts, as well as representatives of innovative companies such as Renault, Hyperloop TT, ENEL, CERTI and WRI. The debates will also involve technicians from the governments of Paraná and Santa Catarina, from the city hall of Florianópolis, representatives of entities such as the National Front of Mayors, Santa Catarina Technology Association (Acate) and Sebrae.

The forum is promoted by iCities, a pioneer company in Brazil in solutions for smart cities, and by FIRA Barcelona, a Spanish public consortium formed by the Municipality of Barcelona, the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. The event also has the support of the Municipality of Florianópolis and the company Softplan, and becomes part of the city's annual calendar, according to the founders of iCities, André Telles and Roberto Marcelino.

“The country needs to evolve a lot in this debate, which brings in-depth content and an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences”, highlights Marcus José Rocha, superintendent of science, technology and innovation at the city of Florianópolis, who will be one of the speakers. The mayor of Florianópolis Gean Loureiro will be at the opening ceremony and will welcome on behalf of the municipality as the host city of the Forum.

Main city

The capital of Santa Catarina is a national reference in technology and innovation, and is currently home to three technology parks, three incubators and several innovation offices. It is also among the five smartest cities in Brazil, according to the general ranking of the company Urban Systems. In the segmented rankings, it appears in second place in the category of technology and innovation, in second in education and in fourth in health, economy and entrepreneurship.

“Florianópolis has one of the main and most dynamic innovation ecosystems in Brazil. This is an event that will stimulate debates and the exchange of ideas and experiences between representatives of entities, companies and public bodies from various regions of Brazil. There will be different visions of smart cities discussed throughout that day”, says businessman Carlos Olsen, president of Global Business, which offers consultancy in the development of projects for the internationalization of companies between Europe and Brazil.

The city of Florianópolis also has a strong connection with Barcelona, the world capital of smart cities. The Government of Santa Catarina maintains an international business, technological and academic cooperation agreement with the Government of Catalonia for the development of impact solutions for the quality of life in cities.

One of the actions resulting from this partnership is the Smart City Week, which will take executives, entrepreneurs and government representatives to the Smart City World Congress, in Barcelona, the largest smart city event in the world. Between November 10th and 18th, the group will also participate in an event organized by the Brazil-Catalunya Chamber of Commerce and visits to Cisco, Indra and Microsoft. The mission is coordinated by iCities, organized by Global Business and planned by Josep Piqué, from the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP) and president of the innovation company La Salle Technova from Barcelona.

Getting to Know the Hyperloop

Among the most innovative experiences that will be presented at the Smart City Forum Floripa, the Hyperloop project, a company founded by businessman Elon Musk, with technologies from other companies in the group, such as Tesla and SpaceX, stands out. Ricardo Penzin, director of business development in Brazil at Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, will show the current stage of the futuristic means of transport.

The technology consists of a capsule that travels on an aluminum rail through a vacuum tunnel and can reach speeds of up to 1,100 km/h. Air suction takes place through solar panels installed along the entire tunnel, making the 100% medium renewable. Recently, the company launched in Toulouse, France, the prototype of a Hyperloop that should enter commercial operation in 2019.

Penzin highlights that Hyperloop – a project with units in 12 countries – is a set of existing technologies with a business model anchored in human beings. “We have a business model that allows us to bring together talent from around the world to develop a solution focused on user knowledge without exception. We have innovation and research and development centers, as well as partnerships with universities that allow us to produce new innovations for global transport”, he explained.

Book release

After the Forum closes at 6:30 pm, there will be an autograph session for the book “Leadership in Science and Technology Parks – The case of Santa Catarina and its similarities with Catalonia”, written by Roberto Rogério do Amaral, post-doctoral fellow in engineering and management of knowledge. The book will be launched during a cocktail party offered to Forum participants, at Softplan's headquarters.
