ACATE President Daniel Leipnitz and Mayor Gean Loureiro sign a term for the creation of the Urban Innovation Laboratory

Project is a partnership between ACATE, ACIF. city hall and companies in the technology sector

Florianópolis has just taken an important step towards becoming a smart city. The Santa Catarina Association of Technology Companies (ACATE), the Commercial and Industrial Association of Florianópolis (ACIF) and the municipal government signed an agreement to develop an Urban Innovation Laboratory. The first stage will be at Rua Vidal Ramos, downtown, where Wi-Fi routers and smart cameras will be installed in October, which can be accessed by merchants and public security agencies.

According to the consultancy Urban Systems, smart city is a model of urbanization and public management that uses recent advances in technology to make cities more efficient and safer. Florianópolis should reach 800 thousand inhabitants in 2035 and today, with 469 thousand, it already faces several challenges. According to Endeavor's 2016 Entrepreneurial Cities Index, some of the main bottlenecks are related to sustainable urban development, mobility, waste management, fiscal and financial crisis, digitalization of public services and time to start a business. Being one of the main technological centers in Brazil, the municipality has the capacity to solve these pains and be recognized as a smart city.

“We chose Rua Vidal Ramos for the pilot project because its tenants and residents are already very organized. They managed to revitalize the street and today it is a model of urbanism for the city”, explains Thaís Nahas, Smart Cities consultant at the Urban Innovation Laboratory. The objective is to make the street smarter and launch it as a model for Brazil by deploying state-of-the-art technologies from companies in the region, also strengthening the local economy.

“It is a project that, in addition to bringing the benefits of technology to traders and residents, aims to give more visibility to the street, increasing the movement of people. The initiative also aims to spread the culture of innovation – very strong within companies – among the citizens of Florianópolis, making the city increasingly competitive and with a stronger economy”, says Diego Ramos, director of Vertical Connectivity at ACATE.

The Urban Innovation Laboratory will be made possible by companies in the technological sector, which provided their solutions to the project: Algar Telecom will provide all connectivity; The Intelbras will grant the routers and cameras; The seventh will donate video surveillance Management and Analysis software licenses, in addition to the application so that shopkeepers can self-monitor; The khronos will provide incident response service; and the Teltec Solutions will deliver the entire cloud infrastructure for accessing and storing images.

According to Marcus Rocha, superintendent of Science, Technology and Innovation of Florianópolis, the project is very positive for the city hall, as there will be several cameras connected at almost zero cost, being able to monitor places where there is currently no access. "The intention is to transform Florianópolis into an open-air laboratory for innovation. The action at Vidal Ramos is the first of a pilot project of the Urban Innovation Laboratory, which will be developed in the long term. The objective is to enable innovation projects that impact on urban issues in the city", says Rocha.

Rosângela Macedo Coelho, director of the Regional Center of the Commercial and Industrial Association of Florianópolis (ACIF), has had a store in Vidal Ramos for over 20 years and has followed the entire process of revitalization and strengthening of street safety. She says that shopkeepers are very optimistic about the possibility of monitoring all local commerce within their companies. "For us, who have already lived through moments of great insecurity, fear of violence and suffering from frequent thefts, initiatives like this bring hope and confidence to boost business", he says.

After the implementation of connectivity and security, which is the first stage of the project, the street must receive technologies that improve its sustainability, such as the generation of renewable energy and sensors for noise, pollution and solar incidence levels. For the next stages of the Urban Innovation Laboratory, a competition for innovative technology-based solutions will be held among ACATE members, who seek to improve the quality of life of citizens and visitors to Florianópolis.
