R$ 1.5 billion will be made available to support projects

Finep will offer better financing conditions to Brazilian companies that present Internet of Things (IoT) projects. R$ 1.5 billion will be made available to support initiatives related to the theme until the end of 2018. The launch of the action, called Finep IoT, took place on Tuesday, 19/6, at the financing company's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

The event was attended by the acting president of Finep, Ronaldo Camargo, and the minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC), Gilberto Kassab. “Finep has been preparing to enter the IoT market for a year and a half”, highlighted Ronaldo Camargo. On the occasion, ABES was present with Jamile Sabatini Marques, director of Innovation and Development at the entity, and Werter Padilha, coordinator of the IoT Committee.

To offer more attractive credit, Finep will grant sector relevance bonuses of 1.0% per year (yy) on top of its existing lines of action. The bonus is cumulative with the bonus for presenting financial guarantees, that is: with Finep IoT, companies can obtain loans with interest rates of up to TJLP-1.0% aa If the project focuses on telecommunications, the best rate becomes ser TR+3% aa Depending on the level of innovation of the Strategic Innovation Plans (PEIs), Finep can finance up to 90% of the project. The grace period is up to 48 months and the total period can reach 12 years, also according to the relevance of the innovation.

To qualify for the program, projects must have as a reference the concept of the Internet of Things and other technologies that enable Advanced Manufacturing, with applications in health, industry, agribusiness (rural environment) and urban development (cities). Companies with gross operating revenue from R$ 16 million are eligible to participate. The minimum value of transactions is R$ 5 million.

Finep's Director of Innovation, Rennys Aguiar, pointed out that, in addition to companies, there are always other actors involved in the innovation process, such as public and private ICTs, public administration bodies and regulatory bodies. “Ideally, these agents get involved in the process, preferably articulated in consortia, public-private arrangements or innovation systems,” he said.

The action is divided into three axes: development of digital solutions based on IoT and other enabling technologies; formulation of strategic plans for digitalization of production processes; and implementation of strategic plans for digitalization of production processes.

Most of the resources (R$ 1.1 billion) come from Finep itself. The remainder (R$ 400 million) comes from the Fund for the Technological Development of Telecommunications (Funttel). It is the first time that Finep has launched a promotion program to encourage the sector in the country.

For Minister Gilberto Kassab, the main objective is to regain confidence in innovation in the country: “We are on the right path, with public and private institutions, academia and universities understanding each other”.
