The public agency extended until January 26 the deadline for applications for the second round of Finep Startup, a program that aims to provide resources and knowledge to technology-based start-ups. The funder will select 25 more companies to invest during the process. Access the public call here.

Due to the high demand (more than 500 startups registered) in the first round, Finep expanded the themes present in the program (inclusion of Healthtech) and included the category enabling technologies, composed of: Blockchain; Artificial intelligence; Microelectronics; Nanotechnology; and Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality.

The main objective with the change is to serve emerging technology-based companies that have as a central element of their competitive strategy the development of products, processes or services based on the enabling technologies listed, thus covering companies that were not served by the first round of the notice.

Finep also released the 25 companies selected in the first round of Finep Startup. The chosen ones will receive investment from the financing company of up to R$ 1 million, based on the presented business plan.

The Southeast region had the most startups contemplated – 15 in total –, followed by the South (7), Northeast (2) and Midwest (1). São Paulo was the state with the most companies selected (7), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6) and Rio Grande do Sul (4). Paraná and Pernambuco are represented by 2 startups each, while Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul have 1 company each. All selected companies will still undergo a technical visit, the last stage of the process.

The Finep Startup program intends to leverage companies that are in the final stage of product development, to put on the market, or that need to gain production scale. For this, Finep will provide knowledge and financial resources through participation in the capital of these startups. The investment will be made through a stock option contract.

To encourage entrepreneurs to seek private resources, Finep will give up to 5 points to companies that are contributed by angel investors. The amount of points will depend on the value of the private investment, the minimum of which is R$ 50 thousand. In all, there are 20 possible points: 15 from the assessment of the startup's value proposition and 5 obtained if it receives private investments of R$ 250 thousand or more.
