FCA – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Google announced a first-of-its-kind collaboration to integrate Google's self-driving technology into the new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan to expand the technology company's testing program. This agreement marks the first time Google has worked directly with an automaker to integrate its self-driving system, including sensors and software, into a passenger car.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans will be used later this year for self-driving tests, more than doubling Google's current fleet of self-driving vehicles. Engineering responsibilities will be shared based on each company's specific expertise. FCA will initially design and manufacture around 100 vehicles specifically for Google's self-driving technology, which will integrate the suite of sensors and computers that vehicles will need to navigate roads autonomously.

"FCA has a team of agile and experienced engineers, and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan is well suited to Google's self-driving technology," said John Krafcik, CEO of Google's Self-Driving Car Project. “The opportunity to work with FCA engineers will accelerate our efforts to develop a fully autonomous car that will make our roads safer and make commuting easier for people who cannot drive.”

Self-driving cars have the potential to prevent more than 33,000 deaths that occur each year on US highways, 94% of which are caused by human error. This collaboration will help FCA and Google better understand what it will take to enable self-driving cars around the world. The self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan will be tested on a private proving ground in California before being driven onto public roads.

Google's Self-Driving Car Project

Google's Self-Driving Car Project is working to develop fully autonomous vehicles, which have the potential to make our roads safer and increase mobility for millions of people who cannot drive. The main goal is to help people get from A to B at the touch of a button. In the seven-year history of the project, the test fleet vehicles have autonomously driven 2.4 million kilometers on public roads, and are currently being tested in the United States in Mountain View (California), Austin (Texas), Kirkland ( Washington) and Phoenix (Arizona). The Google Autonomous Car Project is part of X, a company in the Alphabet group, which is Google's holding company.
