FAPESP and Microsoft Brazil launched a public notice for the selection and support of research projects on computer vision allied to Artificial Intelligence. Proposals for the development of tools with application in urban mobility, public and industrial security and infrastructure will be selected. The value shared by the two parties for supporting selected projects, developed in cooperation, for up to four years, can reach R$ 4.5 million. The deadline for submitting projects ends on December 11.

The topics of interest are:

· Computer vision theory
· Action recognition from RGB video
· Object tracking
· Crowd Analysis
· Object detection, recognition and segmentation
· Human detection, recognition and re-identification
· Video analytics
· Efficient, real-time computational methods

Funding for selected projects will be made in accordance with the rules of the FAPESP Research Partnership for Technological Innovation Program (PITE), aimed at developing high-tech products and processes in partnership with companies.

Proposals must be submitted by researchers linked to public or private research and higher education institutions in the State of São Paulo by December 11, 2017. The results will be released on May 11, 2018. It is expected that the researchers responsible for the selected projects collaborate with Microsoft researchers, including visiting the Microsoft research lab in Brazil.

“The collaboration with Microsoft is one of the oldest and most fruitful of FAPESP. The company values advanced research and has intense activities of its own, ensuring effective collaboration. In this call for research proposals, the topic of computer vision allied to Artificial Intelligence relates very well to FAPESP's interest in topics related to Advanced Manufacturing”, said Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, scientific director of FAPESP.

“Microsoft sees support for research as a key element for the country's development. This is a very important initiative to foster cutting-edge scientific research that, in the future, will promote advances in crucial issues for society through the use of Artificial Intelligence”, says Luiz Pires, director of the Advanced Technology Laboratory at Microsoft Brazil.

The call is provided for in the second Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement between FAPESP and Microsoft, signed in 2012. The selection of proposals uses the methodology of peer analysis, which takes into account opinions on the merits of the proposals made by experts not linked to the Foundation , active in Brazil and abroad.

FAPESP and Microsoft signed the first agreement for cooperation in research in December 2006. In eight previous Calls for Proposals, 21 collaborative projects were selected and supported that produced scientific advances in Information and Communication Technology, focused on solutions in areas and themes such as health, agricultural planning, biodiversity, climate change, environment, bioenergy, integration of individuals with special needs and provision of public services via the WEB, among others.
