Jorge Guimarães, CEO of Embrapii, and José Goldemberg, president of FAPESP, sign an agreement

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Brazilian Industrial Research and Innovation Company (EMBRAPII), a social organization qualified by the Ministries of Education (MEC) and of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) to to explore synergies between technological research institutions and companies, today signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research aimed at the development of technology.

The Agreement provides for the financing of scientific and technological research projects carried out in teaching and research institutions in the State of São Paulo with the participation and co-financing of companies. The two signatories will invest up to R$ 40 million divided equally over five years.

FAPESP's support will be provided within the scope of the Program to Support Research in Partnership for Technological Innovation (PITE), created in 1994 by the Foundation to co-finance cooperative research between researchers linked to research institutions in the State of São Paulo and researchers from research of companies located in Brazil or abroad.

For Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, scientific director of FAPESP, support for research at PITE has increased in recent years. “The FAPESP-EMBRAPII agreement facilitates the submission of research projects to the FAPESP Program to Support Research in Partnership for Technological Innovation (PITE), which encourages university-industry collaboration in exploratory research,” he said. “PITE has developed a lot and in 2015 the amount contracted for the program was the highest in FAPESP’s history, thanks to the bold projects of the Collaborative Applied Research Centers, which unite the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers Program (CEPID) with PITE . As a result, we hope that there will be more opportunities for research groups in São Paulo to partner with EMBRAPII”.

Today, some of the partner companies in PITE projects are GlaxoSmithKline, Microsoft, Embraer, Peugeot-Citroën, AstraZeneca, Natura and Sabesp, among others. About R$ 73 million are contracted for the complete execution of the 39 projects currently underway with the participation of 21 large companies.

“The partnership is another step towards the development of new technologies in the country. We are going to take advantage of the knowledge of Brazilian researchers and the scope of FAPESP to attract more companies that need an innovative solution for their business”, said Jorge Guimarães, CEO of EMBRAPII.

FAPESP and EMBRAPII are already partners in supporting the development of customized orthopedic prostheses (place the link to Agência), made with niobium-titanium (Nb-Ti) and titanium-niobium-zirconium (Ti-Ni-Zr) alloys by selective laser fusion technique, developed by the Technological Research Institute (IPT), Brazilian Metallurgy and Mining Company (CBMM) and the Association for Assistance to Disabled Children (AACD), within the scope of PITE.

The investment of R$ 8.2 million in this project will be divided between CBMM (R$ 2.69 million), FAPESP (R$ 1.8 million), EMBRAPII (R$ 2.17 million) and the government of the State of São Paulo (R$ 1.6 million).
