Autonomy of things, immersive technologies and ethics and digital privacy will be some of the themes that will impact society in 2019, according to Andre Miceli

With the continuous and agile digital transformation in Brazil and in the world, the expectation regarding what will happen in 2019 is huge. Recognized for pointing out digital trends in recent years, FGV's digital business coordinator, professor Andre Miceli, makes his bets, especially with regard to the evolution of blockchain, the autonomy of things, immersive technologies and digital ethics and privacy. In his past analyses, he has highlighted well in advance the fall of cryptocurrencies in the current model, the rise of Amazon, the increase in the use of analytics, the personalization of offers in e-commerce, the use of virtual reality in the real estate market, the emergence of on-premises mobility apps.

"Those who can anticipate or have access to trends, prepare themselves against the competition and develop fundamental competitive differentials to stay in the market", highlights the specialist in digital society.

Digital trends for 2019, according to Andre Miceli:

Ethics and digital privacy

This will be one of the main themes of the year in Brazil. Digital ethics and privacy are a growing concern for individuals, organizations and governments. People are increasingly concerned about how their personal information is being used by organizations in the public and private sectors, so the demand for clarity will increase for companies that are not proactively addressing these issues. I expect there will be an increasing focus on compliance, risk mitigation and values in the coming years but 2019 will be important as it marks the last full year before the Brazilian General Data Protection Law compliance threshold. Companies will have until 2020 to implement the mandatory changes approved this year here. Therefore, there will be investment, demand and various services needed. Part of the privacy issue is ethics but now part of it is law. Both cases hurt in the pocket and this usually generates important movements.

Autonomy of things

The term Autonomous things will be increasingly common. Autonomous things, abbreviated AuT, or the Internet of Autonomous Things, abbreviated as IoAT, represent the arrival of computers in the physical environment, through entities that function without the need for human direction, moving freely and interacting with people and other objects. In recent years, we have seen a fairly consistent evolution of artificial intelligence technologies. The time has come for us to begin to witness a practical application of them. Robots, vehicles, drones and appliances will be the gateway. In Brazil, tractors in agriculture and robots in factories will mark the beginning. In the world, it will be possible to see very clear perspectives for the other equipment.

Blockchain

In the reviews of what 2018 would be like, I received a lot of criticism for saying that there would be a separation between bitcoin and blockchain, so to speak, your ledger. Let's think about it: a Google search for blockchain, excluding the term bitcoin, returns over 165 million records. It seems so, people are talking about one without the other. And by the way, 2019 will see some industries adopt technology in their business. Technology is set to start reshaping some industries, enabling decentralized arrangements, providing transparency and reducing friction between business ecosystems. While many companies are just starting to explore blockchain and assess its potential, early adopters such as Walmart and Maersk are already expanding their pilot programs.

immersive technologies

We have opened a stage where, over the next two decades, we will see colossal adoption of conversational platforms. These instruments, which change the way people interact with the world, will bring a new immersive experience. Augmented, mixed and virtual reality equipment has the potential to increase productivity in various sectors, increase the perception of individuals with some type of physical limitation, change the way they perceive shapes, accompany people, talk, travel, consume content and, in general lines, live. The next year will be a milestone in the popularization of this experience.

e-sports

E-sports are growing in a very expressive way, especially in the United States, China and also in Brazil. With an audience of more than 160 million enthusiasts and hundreds of competitions taking place and being broadcast on the internet and on television in several countries and revenues reaching triple digits, it is natural and consequent that interest in the sport will only increase in the next year. Some trends in this scenario seem appropriate, such as the convergence in the business model, the emergence of franchises and an increasing number of esports practitioners and spectators.
