Company will provide data storage and protection technology

The Organizing Committee of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games signed a contract with EMC to be a supplier for the Olympic Games, as the company met all the reliability, availability, scalability and security requirements for this type of event, which does not allow failures and has the largest technology partners in the market.

“The competition will generate essential opportunities for the development of many areas, such as sports, but also in the city's infrastructure and strongly in technology. We are excited to be part of this great opportunity and to be able to leave a legacy of innovation and improvement of the Olympic Games together with each partner and Rio 2016”, says Carlos Cunha, CEO of EMC Brasil.

EMC's solutions will support the two main information technology towers at Rio 2016 (Rede Administrativa-ADMIN and Rede Jogos-GAMES), which centralize the data obtained from the 35 installations competitions, in which more than 10,500 athletes will be competing. This capability will promote environments for storing and protecting the data generated, permeating all phases of Rio 2016, from planning to the period of operations (technical tests, test events and games).

Crucial data such as competition results, event photos and videos, information on athletes and their nations, facility records, and more will be stored and protected using EMC technologies: Avamar, EMC VNX and RecoverPoint🇧🇷 The space saved by using EMC solutions for data storage is enough to two million of additional photographs, for example. For the event, storage space will be allocated for more than 55 terabytes of data, equivalent to 720,000 photos or 4000 minutes of footage.

The data protection platforms for Rio 2016 will be based on the EMC Avamar (backup/restore) and EMC RecoverPoint (data replication) families. Avamar uses EMC's patented technology for space-saving, real-time deduplication, ensuring that duplicate data is not stored in the environment, extending the life of the solution and postponing any investments in infrastructure expansions, which reduces the total cost of ownership of environments. EMC RecoverPoint technology provides an innovative architecture that combines long-distance replication with continuous data protection based on purpose-built devices (appliances) – protection against logical failures and optimization of bandwidth in the replication network are natively incorporated into the solution offered, minimizing recovery times in the event of a physical and/or logical failure in the deployed environments.

The partnership with the Organizing Committee of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games boosts the synergy obtained with companies from the EMC Federation, such as RSA and Pivotal, aiming to promote innovation and technological culture in an integrated way among the companies that make up the Federation, worldwide and, now , in particular, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, which will host the 2016 Games.
