EMC Corporation announced the acquisition of three cloud technology companies: Cloudscaling Group, Maginatics and Spanning Cloud Apps. With the acquisitions, EMC expands its ability to offer customers hybrid cloud solutions powered by OpenStack, a cloud option with multi-cloud data mobility, and new “cloud-born” data and application protection capabilities.

Cloudscaling is a leading provider of IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) powered by OpenStack for hybrid and private cloud solutions, and is a founding member of the OpenStack Foundation. Its OCS (Open Cloud System) provides an operating system to manage cloud computing, storage and networking. With this deal, EMC aims to provide many options for managing hybrid and private clouds and accelerating its OpenStack-powered infrastructure offerings.

Magnatics is a cloud technology provider that offers a highly consistent global namespace accessible from any device or location, unlocking the choice and flexibility of enterprise hybrid cloud for EMC customers and partners through interfaces across multiple public clouds and private. The arrival of Maginatics will expand EMC's cloud data protection strategy by enabling the unification of data management and protection across different public, private and hybrid clouds. Maginatics technology also facilitates efficient data mobility across multiple clouds, with data deduplication, WAN optimization, large object handling and multi-threading.

Spanning is a subscription backup and recovery provider for “cloud-born” data and applications. Spanning's solutions avoid interruptions due to lost data in Google Apps, Salesforce.com (solution for Microsoft Office 365 will be available in the first half of 2015). Combining EMC's data protection portfolio with Spanning services should help users confidently implement data protection solutions across all applications and all workloads, wherever data is created and wherever applications reside.
