On June 26, the Brazilian Industrial Innovation Research Company (EMBRAPII) signed a partnership with three research and teaching centers at the University of São Paulo (USP). The São Carlos Institute of Physics (IFSC/USP), the Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture (ESALQ), in Piracicaba, and the Chemical Engineering Department of the USP Polytechnic School will now be part of EMBRAPII's successful model. In addition, in the State of São Paulo, the partnership will also include the Center for Medicinal Chemistry of Open Innovation (CQMED) at Unicamp.

In total, EMBRAPII now gains seven new Units. In addition to the three linked to USP and the Unicamp center, EMBRAPII adds to its Units the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnics (CSEM), in Minas Gerais, the SENAI Innovation Institute, in Santa Catarina, and the Technological Development Institute ( INDT), from Amazonas. The value of the action plans of the seven selected is R$ 177 million, of which R$ 58.8 million is the responsibility of EMBRAPII.

The EMBRAPII model, which now has these seven Units, allows for rapid action for innovation linked to the Brazilian industry. In different areas, these research centers begin to meet business demands by sharing risk in the pre-competitive phase of innovation.

EMBRAPII finances part of the cost of innovation, obeying the following general rule: EMBRAPII can invest up to 1/3 of the Units' expenses with RD&I projects with companies, while the remainder is divided between the partner company and the Unit. By sharing project risks with companies (through the division of project costs), the industrial sector is encouraged to innovate more and with greater technological intensity, thus enhancing the competitive strength of companies both in the domestic market and in the market. International.

The new Units will operate in areas of competence that were previously unheard of for EMBRAPII and with high demand for innovation and the market. Like the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnics (CSEM), in Minas Gerais. He was accredited to work in the area of Printed Electronics, a segment that has revolutionized the electronic components market.

The Physics Institute of São Carlos (IFSC/USP) will present projects in the area of Biophotonics and Instrumentation. The agricultural area was awarded with the Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture (ESALQ), which will work in the area of Biocontrollers of agricultural pests. The Department of Chemical Engineering at Escola Politécnica da USP will offer companies its expertise in the recovery of industrial waste through the so-called “Green Chemistry”, which is the development of sustainable chemical substances. Another promising area is Biopharmaceuticals and Pharmaceuticals. For this competence, the Center for Medicinal Chemistry of Open Innovation (CQMED) at Unicamp was selected.

The SENAI Innovation Institute, from Joinville (Santa Catarina), will work in the area of Laser Manufacturing. Finalizing the selection, the first Unit in the North Region of the country: the Technological Development Institute (INDT), in Manaus (Amazonas), which will work in Advanced Manufacturing. With the accreditation of this institution, EMBRAPII reached all regions of Brazil with its Units.

Since its foundation, EMBRAPII, which has a management contract with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and Ministry of Education (MEC), has already closed 240 projects worth a total of R$ 361 million.
