Working in the Systems Development area is the desire of 6 out of 10 young people aged 16 to 24 (58.1%) who consider the possibility of working with technology. This is what a survey carried out by Serasa Experian, a datatech leader in intelligence solutions for analyzing risks and opportunities, focusing on credit journeys, authentication and fraud prevention, in 2023 with more than 3 thousand people indicates. The ranking of Information Technology (IT) sectors most chosen by respondents follows Design (41.9%), Data Analysis (30.2%) and Technical Support (27.9%). Check the complete data in the table below:

The Serasa Experian study was carried out through interviews, whose questions were in multiple choice format. For the Human Resources Manager at Serasa Experian, Camila Souza, “any area of Technology requires constant and in-depth training. Therefore, those interested in entering this world of IT need to prepare adequately to meet the demand that is already growing and tends to be increasingly competitive.”

Constantly growing market and tips for starting a career in IT

According to the Association of Technology Companies (Brasscom), by 2025 the IT area should generate almost 420 thousand vacancies. “Many young people at the beginning of their careers find it difficult to find an internship, especially in IT, where there is a lot of opportunity, however, the lack of qualified professionals makes the race to get the best positions fierce. That's why it's so important to qualify, seek courses beyond school, and be increasingly prepared when starting your professional journey”, explains Camila Souza. The expert separated five important steps to consider at the beginning of your career in the tech segment. Check out the tips below:

1. Invest in technical skills training – For those who want to start their IT career with authority, gaining prominence as a professional is essential. Investing in the training of technical skills, such as programming languages, concepts linked to databases, engineering and data sciences, and cybersecurity is a promising strategy for creating a good resume.

If the interested party does not have training in the area, it is recommended that they explore options for quality in-person or online courses which, in addition to being rich sources of knowledge, will guarantee professional certification in a safe and accessible way. Furthermore, participating in interactive workshops, Bootcamps, Hackatons and groups on social networks specialized in information technology are complementary activities recommended to expand the network of contacts.

2. Take advantage of college networking – For those who are already enrolled in a course more focused on the Information Technology area at college, we recommend that you take advantage of the opportunity to expand your networking. Attending the academic environment allows active involvement in Technology groups, opening up space for sharing knowledge and experiences with other professionals in the area.

Participation in lectures, events and IT workshops are activities that promote the chance to expand knowledge and the network of contacts with people who already work in the area. This is a space to be aware of internship opportunities, trainee programs and job fairs and create a relationship with recruiters in the area. This will provide a greater understanding of market demands.

Also investing in online networking and using professional platforms to connect with teachers, friends and other technology professionals is also a way to stay informed. Maintaining positive relationships and being proactive in building connections can open doors and provide valuable guidance throughout your career journey.

3. Participate in projects to develop yourself – The execution of projects in the Technology area is important for the intern’s professional development. To this end, active involvement in the construction of projects during graduation is recommended, thus expanding the range of knowledge in a practical way. By developing experiences through relevant tools and technologies, you can immerse yourself in efficient and challenging learning environments.

Students without previous experience or complete academic training can also stand out by developing personal projects, such as obtaining certifications, participating in hackathons and competitions. Furthermore, it is important to provide a portfolio that shows in practice the concepts learned in the classroom. These projects can be created on GitHub, Kaggle (for data scientists), in addition to participating in tech communities, such as Stack Overflow.

4. Applying in different selection processes – Exploring different job opportunities is an important strategy to stand out at the beginning of your career. To achieve this, it is essential that interested parties seek a variety of sources, such as job sites, professional social networks, recruitment events and networking platforms, thus increasing the visibility of recruiters.

During the selection process, adapting the approach based on the specific needs of each company and position is the best strategy. Being prepared for technical interviews, practicing problem solving and clearly detailing previous experiences are essential for good performance. Finally, persistence – every application and interview is a valuable opportunity to learn and grow.

5. Invest in soft skills – Interpersonal skills, known as soft skills, have become increasingly required in selection processes and career development. Adaptability, effective communication, flexibility, teamwork and the ability to solve problems are some examples of soft skills and it is possible to improve them through free online courses. Furthermore, addressing them in the CV can be a big difference, inserting them within other elements such as the fields of experiences and achievements.
