We recently introduced the new AI-powered Bing and Microsoft Edge. They are your co-pilots for the web – offering an improved survey with complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to create content. We've already seen that chat is reinventing the way people search, with over 100 million interactions between Bing and users to date. We've seen people use chat in a variety of ways, from refining answers to complex questions to using it as a form of entertainment or for creative inspiration. Today, we're taking the chat experience to the next level by making the new Bing more visual.

We're excited to announce that we're bringing Bing Image Creator, as well as updated versions of AI-powered visual Stories and Knowledge Cards to the new Bing and Edge. Powered by an advanced version of the DALL∙E model, from our partners at OpenAI, Bing Image Creator allows you to create an image simply by using your own words to describe the image you want to see. Now you can generate written and visual content in one place, from chat.

We know from research that the human brain processes visual information about 60,000 times faster than text, making visual tools a fundamental way for people to search, create, and gain understanding. Based on Bing data, images are one of the most searched categories – second only to general web searches. Historically, searching was limited to images that already existed on the web. Now, there are almost no limits to what you can research and create.

For those in Bing preview, Bing Image Creator will be fully integrated into the Bing chat experience, launching initially in Creative mode. When you enter a description of an image and provide additional context, such as location or activity, and choose a desired art style, Image Creator will generate an image from its own interpretation. This new feature is like a creative copilot. Just type something like “draw an image” or “create an image” into the chat, followed by a description of the image you want, like a look for a Newsletter or inspiration for redecorating your living room.

The Bing Image Creator preview will also be available on Microsoft Edge, making it the first and only browser with a built-in, AI-powered image generator. To use the new feature in Edge, simply click the Bing Image Creator icon in the sidebar to create your image or request it from Bing chat in Edge.

At Microsoft, our teams are guided by Principles and by Responsible AI Standard to build and deploy AI systems reliably. In order to contain the potential misuse of the Image Creator, we are working closely with our partner OpenAI, who developed DALL∙E, to provide an experience that encourages responsible use of the Image Creator. We ensure that OpenAI security, in addition to additional protections, have been incorporated into the new feature. For example, we implement controls to limit the generation of harmful or unsafe images. When our system detects that a potentially harmful image could be generated by a prompt, it blocks the prompt and warns the user. We've also made it clear that Image Creator images are AI generated, and we've included a modified Bing icon in the bottom left corner of each image to help indicate that the image was created using Image Creator. We continue to work closely with OpenAI to build, test and review mitigations for our integrations.

Since we made the new Bing available in preview, we've been closely watching how people are using it to get real-world feedback to improve the experience. In that spirit of learning and creating new features responsibly, we're releasing Bing Image Creator in a phased approach, initially making it available to a preview set of users before expanding more broadly to the market. First, we'll only include Image Creator in Bing Chat's Creative mode, and then it's our intention to make it available in Balanced and Precise modes over time. We are also working on some ongoing optimizations to how Image Creator works in multi-turn chats. We continue to believe that the best way to bring these technologies to market is to test them carefully, openly, so that users can provide feedback.

New AI-powered Visual Stories and Knowledge Cards

To support the growing demand for more visual search experiences, we are also making Stories and Knowledge Cards 2.0 available to all Bing users. Stories provide a more engaging way to browse and interact with content, offering images and short videos. Also available to Bing users today, Knowledge Cards 2.0 is an infographics-inspired experience that provides fun facts and important information at a glance, powered by Artificial Intelligence. It has been updated to include interactive and dynamic content such as charts, graphs, timelines, visual stories and more. With these updates and more coming our way, our goal is to deliver more immersive experiences across Bing and Edge that make finding answers and exploring the web more interesting, useful, and fun.

Availability

The Bing Image Creator built into Bing Chat will begin rolling out to desktop and mobile preview users starting today. For those not on the new Bing preview, the Image Creator experience is available at bing.com/create in English. We will add more language support over time.

Bing Image Creator is also available on Microsoft Edge via the Image Creator icon in the desktop sidebar or on mobile starting today for English Edge users worldwide. Soon, we will also integrate Image Creator into Edge from the new Bing button in chat mode in the preview version of Edge.

If you're not already in the new Bing view, sign up on the waiting list. We are adding more people every day. Thank you for your continued feedback and we look forward to sharing more updates soon.
