ABES removes more than 22,000 illegal content from the internet in the first quarter of 2019, 9% more compared to the same period last year

ABES (Brazilian Association of Software Companies) publishes the internet monitoring data for the first quarter of 2019, which accounted a total of 22,197 illegal content removed from the internet - 9% more than the same period in 2018. The ABES monitoring action, which has been taking place since 2005, aims to track irregular offers on the software programs of companies associated with the entity on the internet.

According to the monitoring data, all types of illegal content analyzed (ads, links and websites) increased over the period analyzed. “In recent months, the Free Market has radically updated its PPPI (Intellectual Property Protection Program) system, of which ABES has been a member since its creation. With the changes implemented, we were able to identify and report several pirated products at once, greatly optimizing our research work. In addition, it is now also possible to monitor products and profiles on the website, making it easier to identify recurring cases ”, explains Rodolfo Fücher, president of ABES.

The association was responsible for detecting 42 sites that violated computer software copyright and removing 28 of them in the first quarter of 2019, showing an increase of 90.91% and 100%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. The amount of overturned ads also grew significantly (16.61%), reaching the 12 thousand in the first quarter of this year, as opposed to 10,000, in the same period in 2018.

The lowest growth rate was that of links removed, with only 1,49%. This is due to the fact that the entity received more complaints in the period to remove ads and websites than links.

The association has already managed to drop an additional 650,000 illegal content on the internet since the creation of the monitoring campaign in 2005, when the software piracy rate in Brazil was 64%. This index is currently at 46%, according to a survey by BSA | The Software Alliance. “It is a slow job, which requires hours of research and monitoring to identify any online movement that violates the Copyright of Computer Programs. However, this work has become increasingly faster and more efficient thanks to the help of systems such as the Free Market PPPI and complaints made by our associates ”, says Fücher.

The entity reinforces the importance of consumers being aware of very advantageous offers on the internet. "Even on well-known websites, when the consumer finds an offer with attractive values and very different from the common, it is better to be suspicious, because in addition to not working in its entirety, the illegal software may still be loaded with viruses", warns the president of the entity.
