Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel, Samsung and Wind River are part of the initiative

Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel, Samsung and Wind River have joined a new industry consortium focused on improving interoperability and defining connectivity requirements for the billions of devices that will form the Internet of Things (IoT) ). The Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) is focused on defining a common communications framework based on industry standard technologies to connect wirelessly and intelligently manage the flow of information between personal and emerging computing devices to the IoT, regardless format, operating system, or service provider.

The associates will contribute with software and engineering resources for the development of a specification protocol, the implementation of a source code and a certification program, in order to accelerate the development of the IoT. The OIC specification will cover a range of connectivity solutions, using existing and emerging wireless standards, and will be designed to be compatible with a variety of operating systems.

The leaders of a wide range of vertical industry segments - from the smart home, to office solutions, the automotive segment and more - will participate in the program. This will help ensure that the ICO's open source specifications and deployments will help companies design products that manage and exchange information intelligently, reliably and securely under varying consumption and bandwidth conditions and even without an Internet connection.

The first open source code of the ICO will focus on specific requirements for solutions for the office and the smart home. For example, the specifications could simplify remote control and receiving notifications from smart home appliances or business devices using secure smartphones, tablets or PCs. Possible solutions for consumers include the ability to remotely control home systems to save money and conserve energy. In companies, visiting employees and suppliers can collaborate securely while interacting with screens and other devices in a meeting room. Specifications for other IoT opportunities, including the automotive, healthcare and industrial segments, will be released soon.

Other member companies, including other leading appliance and appliance manufacturers, service and solution providers, chipset manufacturers and more are expected to join the ICO in the coming months. For more information, visit www.openinterconnect.org.
