São Paulo is the most connected and smart city in Brazil, according to the Connected Smart Cities 2017 ranking

Connected Smart Cities is an annual survey of smart and connected cities in the country and is in its third edition. It analyzes 11 sectors from more than 700 municipalities, based on 70 indicators. The 11 sectors are: mobility, urbanism, technology and innovation, entrepreneurship, governance, education, energy, environment, health, safety and economy.

The capital of São Paulo ranked first in the general ranking, followed by Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Vitória. The Southeast region concentrates the smartest and most connected cities, with six municipalities among the top ten. The North region is the only one without a representative among the top ten – Palmas, capital of Tocantins, occupies 15th place. In the South, Curitiba holds the best position. Recife leads in the Northeast region. Brasília, on the other hand, appears ahead in the Midwest.

“São Paulo leads essentially because it stands out in practically all 11 sectors analyzed. It is the city with the most availability of mass public transport modes and has new Master Plan and Land Use and Occupation laws. It is still the birthplace of many small companies, as well as a destination for research funds. Finally, it is home to technology companies of all sizes, attracting investment and business”, says Thomaz Assumpção, CEO of Urban Systems.

“But it is important to emphasize that Brazilian cities are still very far from their 'competitors' around the world. The space our cities have to advance in relation to themselves is 50%. In relation to the world, it is much bigger”, he completes.

The ranking also ranks the top three cities by size. As in the national and regional parameters, São Paulo ranks first among cities with more than 500 thousand inhabitants. Vitória got the best position between 100 and 500 thousand inhabitants (fifth place in the general ranking). Cajamar, in the interior of São Paulo, is the best ranked city with up to 100,000 inhabitants (36th position in the general ranking).

Rankings were also drawn up for each sector analyzed, with emphasis on Belo Horizonte, first place in the environment, Vitória, first place in health, Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, top in safety, and the capital of São Paulo, first in mobility.
