Participants answered questions regarding topics such as their own structure, hiring employees with a disability and the accessibility of their websites

THE ABES (Brazilian Association of Software Companies), in partnership with São Paulo Municipal Secretariat for People with Disabilities, conducted a survey with associates to outline a profile of accessibility in the technology sector. In all, 18 companies answered questions related to topics such as their own structure, hiring employees with some disabilities and the accessibility of their websites - adapting to the determinations of Law 13.146 / 2015, which makes accessibility on internet pages mandatory for the use of people with disabilities, guaranteeing them access to available information.

The survey shows that we still have great challenges to ensure accessibility, but that there is already an awareness of the importance of this issue.. Our goal is to demonstrate that the issue of “accessibility” is not just about people with physical mobility restrictions - as there are several types of disabilities and we must always consider them when developing a project. The case of websites is a good example: there are several resources that allow the transmission of content to people with visual and hearing disabilities, especially with audios describing images and texts or textual transcription of any non-visible content.“, Comments Francisco Camargo, president of ABES.

In all, 16.7% of the interviewed companies have employees with some disability, and 27.8%, consider their environments “very adapted” for the disabled - while the majority (50%) declare to satisfy this condition “reasonably”. As for the sites, 66,7% understand that their pages on the internet are not accessible. Another fact that draws attention is the 77.8% who answered that they had never invested in digital accessibility.

A total of 72.2% declared that they do not know NBR 9050: 2015 or other standards that direct necessary adaptations to physical spaces for people with disabilities. More than half (55.6%) understand that toilets are the greatest architectural barrier for access and movement within the company. In the possible investments to improve digital accessibility, 61,11% would like to train their own employees, while 27,7% would hire an outsourced company.
