Voice assistants, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and chatbots are examples of technologies that have enabled companies to bring to light ideas and products that seemed far away a few years ago. THE Adobe raised five cases of how organizations relied on emerging technologies in 2018 to bring experiences that were previously only possible in movies:

Turning cars into voice-enabled personal assistants

Car manufacturers were some of the first companies to adopt voice technology through integrations with Amazon's Alexa and other voice device manufacturers. This year, BMW took its voice strategy to the next level by building its own smart personal assistant, which will be found in car models from March. According to a statement from the luxury car brand, "This will mark the beginning of a new era for the BMW Group, in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking."

Empowering Artists with AI and Machine Learning

As part of the “Adobe Remix” program, Adobe invites community members to brand the Adobe logo. The most recent Adobe Remix project was by Albanian visual designer Vasjen Katro (aka Baugasm), who used Adobe Sensei's style transfer technology, Adobe's artificial intelligence.

Style transfer technology allows artists to automatically apply structure and detail from one image to another – once a tedious process. As a result, Katro was able to quickly transfer the style of Van Gogh's brush strokes into the organic textures he used for his version of the Adobe logo. He then combined digital and organic media to complete his work on Adobe Creative Cloud, using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe After Effects.

Immersive Medical Education with Augmented Reality

Case Western Reserve University's Cleveland Clinic is using augmented reality to allow students to study the human body in an interactive 3D format. This points to a transformation in the healthcare sector. Today, the university is using the Hololens headset to educate the next generation of caregivers. Eventually, augmented reality will be implemented in exams and, gradually, in operating rooms.

Managing selection processes with smart chatbots

Mya is an online recruitment company that helps companies attract, engage and hire Millennial talent. The face of the company is an intelligent chatbot called "Mya", which manages candidate selection. Mya can actually “talk” to thousands of candidates at once via text messages, Facebook, Skype, email or via chat. Your role is in the pre-hiring part of the selection process. She answers frequently asked questions, provides process progress updates, and provides candidates with tips and guidance.

Connecting online and offline stores with smart shelves

Kroger this year announced a partnership with Microsoft Azure to implement smart shelves in its stores. EDGE (Enhanced Display for Supermarket Environment) processes data generated by customer actions on and around supermarket shelves in real time.
