According to a survey by the Court of Auditors of the State of São Paulo (TCE-SP) in 2023, approximately 70% of municipalities in São Paulo have already adopted some digital public management system to streamline essential services, such as issuing permits and providing services to citizens. Among the most digitalized services are the scheduling of appointments through the SUS, with integration with the National Regulatory System (SISREG) and online platforms for requesting environmental and urban licenses, reflecting an evolution that seeks to simplify access and reduce bureaucracy in cities.

In Brazil, the Ministry of Economy's Digital Government Strategy, in force since 2018, has been the main program to drive digital transformation in the public sector, reaching more than 4,000 municipalities by 2024, according to data from e-GOV Brasil. The technologies adopted include integrated public management systems (ERP), remote service platforms, the use of real-time data to monitor urban services, and the digitalization of administrative processes, which have allowed city governments to make more agile and efficient decisions.

Despite the challenges involved, the advancement of digitalization in Brazilian city governments has already demonstrated a positive impact on the efficiency of public management and on getting closer to citizens. For experts, the next step is to take full advantage of the potential of data and digital tools available, making processes even more strategic and integrated. This is what highlights Wilian Josué, director and founder of UniCidades: “Although the technology is available, the biggest challenge lies in training teams and integrating systems so that data can be used strategically,” he explains. “The intelligent use of data is what will truly transform public management, bringing government and citizens closer together and making cities more agile and prepared for the challenges of the future.”
