Research proposals in strategic areas will be accepted

Registration for the second edition of the National Institutes of Science and Technology Program (INCT) is now open. The purpose of the call is to support research activities of high scientific impact in strategic areas, at the frontier of knowledge and that seek solutions to major national problems, through the consolidation of INCTs.

The topics preferably supported are: environmental technologies and climate change mitigation; biotechnology and sustainable use of biodiversity; agriculture; health and pharmaceuticals; space, defense and security; urban Development; public security; alternative sources of renewable energy, biofuels and bioenergy; nanotechnology; nuclear research; information and communication technology (ICT); and air traffic control and management.

Applications can be made until September 8 through the Carlos Chagas platform (http://carloschagas.cnpq.br/). The result will be announced in March 2015, on the CNPq website.

The public notice initially has R$ 641.8 million, of which R$ 300 million comes from the federal government, through the MCTI funding agency, the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes/MEC) and the National Fund of Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT). Other entities, public or private, may compose the financing group of the proposals, even after contracting the projects in which they are interested in contributing additional amounts, in a negotiation stage foreseen by the public notice.

The project proponent must have a doctorate degree and have their CV registered on the Lattes Platform, updated until the deadline for submitting the proposal. It is necessary to have some employment relationship with a public or private institution.

The Program is aimed at setting up new INCTs or strengthening existing institutes. For the existing INCTs, the judgment will also consider the results obtained, with quantifiable goals, the strengthening of the INCT in the host institutions (transformation into Research Centers, Technology Centers or equivalent), creation of graduate programs, generation of results transferred to the public sector or companies, among other aspects.
