Attack hampered the disclosure of results of radiographic examinations of public hospitals in the federal capital

In the last week of July, public sectors in the Federal District, mainly hospitals linked to the State Department of Health, and the Na Hora program, of the Secretariat for the Modernization of Immediate Citizen Service, had computers affected by a cyber attack of a variation of the virus Wanna Cry, hampering the disclosure of results of radiography exams in the federal capital.

To stop the spread of the virus and return to the stability of the network, SUTIC / SEPLAG, Undersecretary for Information and Communication Technology of the State Secretariat for Planning, Budget and Management, responsible for managing the GDFNet highway, counted on the help of technical partners, Microsoft and Brasoftware. As the main partner of Microsoft and a supplier of licensing and consulting contracts, Brasoftware was called to work with the Secretariat in the automatic distribution of antivirus in Windows versions 7, XP and 2003, providing technical support to the team and guiding best practices .

Data leakage

“We followed up on the problem and the outbreaks were suppressed in a week. Now, there are only small occasional cases that do not interfere with the daily activities of the organs previously affected. The incidence of the virus also did not generate access to sensitive information and did not allow data encryption ”, guaranteed the IT Under-Secretary, Fernando Soares.

Through its regional partnerships, Brasoftware teamed up with government professionals to suggest best practices for stabilizing operating systems. “Brasoftware worked, through partners, in SEPLAG's crisis room and in the configuration of virus prevention and removal tools. The other agencies benefited through our procedures and guidelines ”, completes the IT Under-Secretary.

IT Decentralization and Stabilization

The stoppage took the GDF by surprise and caused hospitals to reschedule appointments with patients who were unable to view test results. “Despite this, there was a quick positioning by the interlocutors of the Federal District government to solve the problem”, says Gustavo de Paula, Regional Manager Midwest, MG and RJ at Brasoftware. “The affected State Secretariats use a common network to access the internet and electronic mail. As soon as the attack was detected, they were communicated via phone, e-mail or Whatsapp and there was no loss and copy of data ”, reiterates Gustavo, stating that the spread of the virus was stopped.

According to Gustavo de Paula, the weakness in the systems is due to the outdation of some antivirus programs and operating systems. Due to the decentralization of IT in the DF organs, the management of the technical infrastructure is the responsibility of each unit. According to SEPLAG, its role is to manage and centralize the network, but each agency operates autonomously.
