Survey outlined expectations of Brazilians about innovation in education

Intel Corporation announced new information about the “Innovation Barometer” study commissioned from Penn Schoen Berland. The objective was to raise people's perception and expectations regarding the impact of technology and innovation in their lives. A new part of the study, called “Classrooms of the Future” and dedicated to the application of technology in education, shows that the vast majority of Brazilians (81%) believe that the use of technology in schools is inevitable and that the country should invest in a technological support for pedagogy.

“We had already confirmed in the first stage of the survey that Brazilians have a very optimistic profile in relation to technology. This attitude is positive when we consider its relationship with education, as through technology it is possible to update the tools available for teaching in our schools”, commented Edmilson Paoletti, Business Development Manager for Education at Intel. “For us at Intel, developing technologies applied to education means investing in a next generation that will be more entrepreneurial and guide innovation within our society, starting from school”.

Reinforcing this optimistic attitude, 77% of Brazilians, 69% of the world, think that schools and teachers should rely more on technology to improve the educational system. When asked which subjects children should learn, 57% believe there should be more technology education at school.

Thinking about the future of pedagogy, the Brazilians (82%) believe that in 10 years elementary school will use online activities as a supplementary tool for instruction initiated with the teacher in the classroom. The tendency of online interaction is also a bet of the respondents (60%), when they say that the exams will be done in a virtual environment, abolishing the printed test. And yet 55% thinks that children will have to use tablets or another mobile device to participate in classes.

As for the relationship between teacher and student, the Brazilians (65%) think that technology will help bring them closer together in the classroom, and their relationship will get stronger. For 79%, the software available for education will help the teacher to dedicate more time to the student, for a personalized teaching. For respondents, a virtual teaching model can transform the educational process into a more personal (60%) and social and collaborative (61%) experience at the same time.

The survey was conducted online by Peen Schoen Berland at the request of Intel in Brazil, China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan and the United States between July 28 and August 15, 2013. It was conducted among a representative sample of 12,000 adults aged 18 and over, with a margin of error of plus or minus 0.89 percentage points. The overall margin of error in the US was 2.53 percentage points and 4.38 percentage points for this session.
