Country ranks 1st in South America and 17th worldwide

Brazil rose 4 positions in the Open Data Barometer 2015, in which it took the first position in South America and the 17th place in the index that measures the impact of open data initiatives in the world. On the subcontinent, Brazil is followed by Uruguay (19th), Colombia (28th) and Chile (30th).

“The Ministry of Planning has made many efforts to promote the opening and use of data with the bodies that make up the entire Federal Public Administration”, said the Secretary of Information Technology, Cristiano Heckert. “Knowing that Brazil has stood out in international rankings in the area of Open Data brings an injection of spirit to us who are working for a government focused on the citizen, more transparent and 100% digital”, added the secretary.

According to the third version of the Open Data Barometer 2015, the elements evaluated and that qualified Brazil in terms of open data are the ease, implementation and impact of data. In Brazil, the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management, through the Information Technology Secretariat, has been working intensively to promote the Digital Governance Strategy (EGD). Among EGD's main actions are the agreements signed with executive bodies to implement the Open Data policy through the data.gov.br portal.

“From the beginning, the open data policy in Brazil has been done with social participation, and several bodies have committed to drawing up their plans. It is good to remember that society can also support by suggesting which topics should be opened up”, informed Heckert.
