Symantec's Annual Report points out that Brazil receives the most cyber attacks in Latin America

According to the 24th edition of the Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR), Symantec's annual security report, Brazil occupies a leading global position when it comes to cyber threats. Among the eight types of attacks analyzed, the country had an increase in five: bots (3rd), ramsomware (4th), cryptominers (5th), phishing (9th) and malware (11th). Brazil kept the 3rd place globally in terms of Spam, and lost place only in network (10th) and web (12th) attacks.

Of the 157 countries analyzed by the ISTR, Brazil rose 3 places and is now the 4th that most receives cyber attacks, behind the United States, China and India. In Latin America, the country occupies the first position, with 4,11% of global attacks. Mexico, which is the second country in the region, receives less than half, 1,93%.

Decreased revenues from cryptojacking and ransomware have caused cybercriminals to migrate to new attacks such as formjacking, which obtain credit card data from online shopping forms. Brazil was the 8th most affected country, of the 3.7 million threats blocked in the world by Symantec, 3.1% were made in Brazil. Check the results for Brazil here.

Privacy

With the recent Cambridge Analytica data scandal, Facebook's privacy hearings, the implementation of the General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) in Europe and the General Data Protection Law in Brazil, and revelations about Tracking app location and privacy bugs in popular apps like Apple's FaceTime feature, consumer privacy gained the spotlight in the past year.

The smartphone may be the best spying device ever – camera, listening device and location tracker, all in the same device, which is voluntarily charged and used wherever the owner is. While already targeted by states for traditional spying, smartphones have also become a lucrative tool for collecting personal information from customers, with mobile app developers appearing as the worst offenders.

Symantec's ISTR provides a comprehensive view of threats, including information on global threat activity, cybercriminal trends, and hacker motivations. The report analyzes data from the Symantec Global Intelligence Network™, the world's largest civilian threat collection network. It tracks more than 700,000 global adversaries, logs events from 126.5 million attack sensors around the world, and monitors threat activity in more than 157 countries and territories.
