Partnership reinforces the message of the “Legal Entrepreneur” initiative and points out the opportunities, legal responsibilities and technical losses that companies face when using pirated software in their IT infrastructures

Attentive to the sustainable growth of Brazilian companies, Boa Vista SCPC has just joined the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) in the Legal Entrepreneur initiative, which aims to signal the importance of using legal software in all segments of the Brazilian economy , in addition to warning about the risks of unfair competition for a healthier economy.

“As a technology company that supports the decisions of thousands of clients in Brazil, we are also committed to alerting entrepreneurs about the technical and financial risks of not working with their legal technology park. Today, we live in a time of many opportunities, and to turn them into lasting results, it is essential to adopt good management practices based on ethical conduct", comments Dorival Dourado, president of Boa Vista, administrator of SCPC, which operates with a bank database with more than 350 million commercial consumer information and 42 million business-to-business transaction records.

In addition to causing financial loss, piracy is a crime
By infringing copyright, computer resellers promote unfair competition in the market in which they operate, and may respond criminally with a penalty that can vary from six months to two years of imprisonment or suffer compensation with amounts that reach three thousand times the amount price of each program used or reproduced. “The use of pirated programs is an illegal way to gain competitive advantage and a misguided way to reduce operating costs or increase profit margins. In addition to the material damage caused by irregular software, piracy is a crime”, warns Jorge Sukarie, president of ABES.

Free Software License Management Guide
In September, the Legal Entrepreneur Initiative launched the ABES Software Asset Management Manual. Available free of charge on the entity's website http://www.abes.org.br/manual, the interactive manual shows how a company can maintain compliance with licensing policies, legislation in force and also the most common mistakes made by companies.

Legal Entrepreneur Initiative
The initiative is part of ABES' efforts to reduce the use of pirated software in Brazil. According to data from BSA – The Software Alliance, the country still lives with a software piracy index of 50%. The same entity also points out that, if this type of piracy were reduced in Brazil by 10 percentage points over the next four years, more than 12,300 jobs would be created and more than US$ 4 billion dollars would be returned to the Brazilian economy.

The actions are aimed at raising awareness about this activity that goes against the grain of economic growth and prosperity in the country, and which still contributes to organized crime, preventing the growth of markets, investments in the development of new technologies and generation of new jobs.

The portal www.empreendedorlegal.org.br provides information on Brazilian and international laws against Unfair Competition and the Defense of Intellectual Property, points out technical risks, provides recommendations for leaving software assets in compliance. It also has a link to access the Anonymous Complaints Against Software Piracy portal http://www.denunciopirataria.org.br/, which has strengthened the investigative work of police authorities across the country to identify outbreaks of piracy.
The campaign also counts on the partnership of government and industry entities: ABPI – Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property; APEX – Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency; BSA – The Software Alliance; CNC – National Confederation of Commerce; CNCP – National Council to Combat Piracy; ETCO – Brazilian Institute of Ethics in Competition; MBC – Movimento Brasil Competitivo and Sebrae.
