This Friday, the 2nd, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) launched the Cities Booklet. The publication summarizes data from the study Internet of Things: An Action Plan for Brazil, which is financed by the Bank's Project Structuring Fund and will provide subsidies for the IoT National Plan, where national public policies for the Internet of Things will be established. between 2018 and 2022.

The document was released by the BNDES Planning director, Carlos Da Costa, at a meeting of the Business Mobilization for Innovation (MEI), which took place this Friday, 2nd, in São Paulo, at the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). Smart Cities is identified as one of the priority areas for directing initiatives and public policies for the development of IoT in Brazil, according to the study financed by BNDES and coordinated together with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC).

Public management, transport, traffic monitoring, security and energy efficiency are some of the areas identified as having great potential for the application of the Internet of Things in cities. According to the study, the potential savings in the world with the rationalization of these processes is US$ 1.6 trillion, in 2025. In Brazil alone, this potential economic gain is estimated at US$ 27 billion.

The guide released today also provides a step-by-step guide with a series of steps that public managers must follow to successfully structure IoT solutions. Also found in the guide are the challenges of implementing integrated projects between different sectors, seeking efficiency in investments and optimizing the use of sensors, connectivity networks, in addition to generating more robust databases. Among the main recommendations, the proposal for the elaboration of an Information and Communications Technology Master Plan to guide municipal bodies in the incorporation of IoT solutions over time stands out.

There is also mention of a series of cases of applications already successfully implemented in Brazil and in the world, which demonstrate the existing potential and offer lessons for improvement. Among the examples cited are the pilot program of the private initiative in smart grid in Aparecida do Norte (SP), New smart neighborhoods built for the use of IoT and Minas Gerais and Ceará, Smart parking meters in San Francisco (USA), Controlled Irrigation and System remotely in Barcelona (Spain) and Earthquake Early Warning System in Sichuan (China). As these are rapidly evolving technologies, the booklet will have to be updated periodically, and for that, the BNDES will count on everyone's collaboration.

In the assessment of director Carlos Da Costa, the initiative is “an important contribution by the BNDES to the modernization of Brazilian cities and to the innovative solution of the country's public problems".
