The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications (MCTIC) launched this Thursday, 14th, a call for the selection of pilot projects for the Internet of Things (IoT), initiatives to apply this type of technology that will be tested on experimentation platforms and/or in real environments.

Proposals must be submitted to BNDES by August 31. The initiative is one of the impact measures recommended by the study “Internet of Things: an action plan for Brazil”, carried out by the Bank in partnership with MCTIC.

The total budget for IoT projects is R$ 20 million using non-reimbursable funds. In order to leverage total investments, projects must provide for the application of financial resources as a counterpart, and BNDES will support up to 50% of the cost of each selected initiative. The minimum amount of BNDES support for each pilot project plan will be R$ 1 million.

Solutions implemented by public or private non-profit Technological Institutions within the focus of each of the following environments may be supported: Smart Cities, Rural Environment and Health.

Focus – In the case of Cities, projects should focus on reducing waste, public lighting, increasing surveillance and monitoring capacity, and increasing the attractiveness of public transport.

In the rural environment, the focus should be on the efficient use of machinery and natural resources and on health safety and animal welfare. In relation to Health, the objective is to focus on monitoring patients; assets and inputs; and decentralized diagnosis.

Each institution may present up to three pilots within the same plan aimed at each of these environments. The global amount must be at least R$ 2 million in financeable items, with a lead time of up to 24 months. The proposal evaluation group will be composed of BNDES employees and external representatives with knowledge of the project themes.

At the end of the processes, the institutions that are supported by the BNDES must publish the evaluation of the results of the pilot projects, informing in detail the tests carried out and the performance observed.

With the initiative, BNDES and MCTIC intend to promote the development and diffusion of the Internet of Things in Brazil. In this sense, the Bank is evaluating, together with the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce, the launch of a future call focused on the industrial environment, contributing to the development of Industry 4.0 in the country.

It is also expected, with this public call, to stimulate the innovation environment, identify research and development opportunities and needs for the technology, map adjustment points of the implemented solutions and assess user acceptance.
