The BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye have joined forces to develop fully autonomous vehicles and make future mobility concepts a reality. The three leaders in their respective areas of expertise – automotive industry, technology and guidance systems for self-guided vehicles – are cooperating to create solutions aimed at fully autonomous driving, which should reach the car production lines in 2021.

The platform will include automated driving levels 3 to 5, the latter being 100% free of human intervention. Later, it will be made available to automakers and other companies that can benefit from autonomous machines or artificial intelligence.

Through the cooperation agreement, the three companies established a set of goals and results, including designing completely independent cars based on a common architecture. In the short term, the companies committed to presenting a highly automated driving prototype (HAD – Highly Automated Driving, in English). From 2017, new prototypes will be developed and fleets of this type of vehicle will carry out extended tests.

Together with Intel and Mobileye, the BMW Group has committed to creating necessary solutions and innovative systems for highly automated driving, with the aim of making these technologies ready for series production from 2021. The BMW iNEXT concept car will serve as the basis for the BMW Group's autonomous driving strategy and will set the model for fully autonomous vehicle fleets, not only for the highway but also in urban environments as a vehicle-sharing proposition.

The BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye are convinced that autonomous driving technologies will make traveling safer and easier. The objective of the partnership is to develop timeless solutions capable of allowing drivers not only to take their hands off the wheel, but also to take their eyes (level 3) and finally their mind (level 4) off the road, transforming the time spent inside a car in leisure or part of work. This level of autonomy would allow the vehicle to reach the ultimate goal of moving without human intervention. This would establish an opportunity for fully autonomous vehicle fleets from 2021 onwards, which would lay the groundwork for new business models in a largely connected world.
