BlockBear joins IBM Food Trust to help people with celiac disease by ensuring they consume products that do not harm their health

BlockBear, a company specializing in Blockchain technology and cloud IoT that develops applications for traceability and efficiency of the agribusiness supply chain, has teamed up with IBM Food Trust, a global blockchain-based ecosystem, to incorporate traceability of gluten-free products. in collaboration with the Celiac Association of Uruguay.

Celiac disease is an immune system condition where people cannot consume gluten because it damages the small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and can also be found in vitamins, supplements, hair and skin products, toothpaste and lip balms, among others. It is estimated that one in 100 people may be celiac, although only 10% of them know they have the disease.

Using this solution, BlockBear will incorporate blockchain technology to selectively share key information about the origin and components of food products distributed domestically and internationally to ensure that people with celiac disease and other related digestive disorders make an informed purchase decision. gluten-free products.

“The solution based on the IBM Food Trust not only adds value to consumers themselves, but is also a differential for producing and exporting companies, as it certifies the end-to-end process, from raw material, production, distribution to the point of sale. , in Uruguay or abroad”, says Luis Eirea, business development manager at BlockBear. "In addition, it generates value for points of sale that have a special focus on the sale of quality products, authentic, in good condition and that wish to generate a superior experience for the final consumer".

Using the IBM Food Trust securely connects data across the ecosystem's entire supply chain with confidence and transparency at every point in the chain. And most importantly, end consumers can trust the products they buy and eat while producers minimize waste, fraud and more.

"IBM Food Trust will provide more security and transparency in all transactions carried out by BlockBear with any of its stakeholders and end consumers, ensuring the traceability of products at every point in the chain", says Martin Hagelstrom, Blockchain Leader for IBM Latin America . “This is essential for products that can be consumed by people with celiac disease, because it tracks the origin and stages the product has gone through along the food chain, ensuring that they are truly gluten-free foods without affecting people's health."

BlockBear's plan is to extend this solution to other Latin American countries and to other market segments. In particular, for segments that have special interest and value, knowing exactly what they are consuming, such as products for diabetics, vegans, organics and consumers in general who demand quality, safety and want to know the origin of what they consume.
