Training will begin on April 16; Participants can complete the course at their own pace, as long as they complete it within a maximum of four months

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has open enrollment for the first edition in Portuguese of the free online course on Project Risk Management. Classes are aimed at entrepreneurs, managers in the public or private sector, entrepreneurs of all sizes, self-employed professionals and university students who want to start or improve their journey by acquiring solid knowledge on how to manage business risks.

The training will begin on April 16, with content scheduled for five weeks – an average of six hours per week. However, the student has the flexibility to take the course at his own pace, as long as he completes it in a maximum of four months. According to a report released in 2018 by Sebrae on the percentage of survival of companies in Brazil, of every four businesses opened here, one closes before completing two years in the market. The Project Management Institute (PMI) states that only 51% of public and private sector projects manage to finish on time, and only 57% follow the original budget.

One of the reasons for this underperformance is that companies focus too much on project planning and not so much on the risks that may arise along the way. On the other hand, there are other teams that even design scenarios, but do not have the skills and knowledge to assess so many unknown variables.

The objective of the IDB course is to provide participants with tools to enable them to continue projects in uncertain scenarios. For this, practical cases, selected readings and other learning resources will be made available to participants. “It is very common for entire teams to devote a lot of time and effort to solving problems that could have been foreseen. Training helps managers to anticipate risks through good international practices adopted in several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, whether in the private or public sector,” says Morgan Doyle, IDB representative in Brazil.

Doyle adds that, in the syllabus, there are important points such as identifying risks in scenarios of uncertainty, defining who can provide support, understanding how to manage risks in situations where resources are limited, establishing strategies to respond to risks and monitoring and updating of risks throughout the project.

Participants can win 30 PMI® Development Units

Although the course is completely free, participants who achieve good performance can obtain the Certificate of Verified Identity, issued by the IDB, at the cost of US$25. If they opt for the verified certificate, they will also receive 30 PMI® Professional Development Units (PDUs).

PDUs are the units of measurement used to quantify the learning activities required to renew PMI certification. In Portuguese they are called Professional Development Units. Each hour of activity equals 1 PDU.

Those who are not interested in the verified certificate and meet established academic expectations will be entitled to receive an honor code certificate.

The massive open course (MOOC) is offered through the edX digital platform, the result of a partnership between Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
