Value is 13% higher than the previous year, with emphasis on cigarettes, electronics and vehicles

The seizures of goods and vehicles carried out in 2013 by the Federal Revenue Service of Brazil in Foz do Iguaçu totaled US$ 119.6 million (approximately R$ 284 million), a value that is 13% higher than that recorded in the previous year, when the seizures were US$ 105.4 million. Most of the seizures were carried out within the scope of the Fronteira Blindada operation, carried out on a permanent basis by the Federal Revenue Service units.

The value above comprises the seizures carried out within the scope of the entire jurisdiction of this Police Station, which extends from Foz do Iguaçu/PR to Guaíra/PR, covering the entire region bordering the lake of Itaipu (border of the State of Paraná with Paraguay). It is worth noting that these numbers also include goods received from other partner institutions that work in the fight against smuggling and embezzlement in this border region, such as the Federal Police, Federal Highway Police, Military Police and the Armed Forces.

Regarding the composition of seizures, cigarettes, electronics and vehicles together accounted for more than 73% of the total seizures registered in 2013. Compared to the previous year, vehicles had a reduction of seizures in the order of 17%, electronics had an increase of 11% and cigarettes had an increase of 134% in the period.

However, in relation to cigarettes, it should be noted that the increase in the nominal value in 2013 is related to the modification of the product valuation criterion, which is now based on the price practiced in the domestic market. Disregarding the effects of this change, there is a decrease in the value of cigarette seizures in 2013 around 20% (45 million packs were seized in 2013, against 56 million in 2012).

During 2013, 960 operations were carried out to repress illegal customs by the Federal Revenue Service of Brazil in Foz do Iguaçu, in practically all the municipalities located in the area of its operation. A large part of this work was carried out jointly with partner agencies that work in the fight against crimes of hiring and embezzlement and trafficking in drugs and weapons.
