Apple bought Metaio, a German producer of augmented reality software, for an undisclosed amount, according to a statement to the German market. Augmented reality technology combines real-world images with computer-generated graphics on video screens. Metaio's software is used in retail, industrial and vehicle applications.

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not comment on the objectives," the US company said in a statement.

Analysts at Juniper Research expect the augmented reality technology used in enterprises to grow 10-fold to $2.4 billion from $247 million last year. Other companies vying for this market include France's Total Immersion and Britain's Blippar (Source: Reuters).
